Understanding WDP and ABR file formats

WDP (Windows Media Photo, also known as JPEG XR) is an image file format developed by Microsoft, designed for high-quality image compression and advanced features such as high dynamic range imaging. It is not widely supported outside of certain Microsoft applications.

ABR is the file format used for Adobe Photoshop Brush presets. These files contain collections of brush shapes, textures, and settings, allowing users to import and use custom brushes in Photoshop and compatible software.

Can you convert WDP to ABR?

Direct conversion from WDP (an image format) to ABR (a brush preset format) is not natively supported by any software, as they serve fundamentally different purposes. However, you can use a WDP image as the basis for a new Photoshop brush by following a manual process.

How to create an ABR brush from a WDP image

1. Convert WDP to a compatible image format: Since Photoshop does not support WDP files directly, first convert your WDP file to a common format like PNG or JPEG. You can use IrfanView (Windows) or XnConvert (cross-platform) for this step.
   • In IrfanView: File → Open (select your WDP file), then File → Save As (choose PNG or JPEG).
2. Open the converted image in Photoshop: Launch Adobe Photoshop and open the PNG or JPEG file.
3. Create a brush preset:
   • Select the area you want to use as a brush with the Rectangular Marquee Tool.
   • Go to Edit → Define Brush Preset….
   • Name your brush and click OK.
4. Export your brushes as an ABR file:
   • Open the Brushes panel (Window → Brushes).
   • Select your new brush, then click the menu icon and choose Export Selected Brushes….
   • Save the file as an ABR file.
