A publisher, database, or reference manager may provide citations as .ris files while a colleague or institution requires an EndNote library. Importing the records into EndNote Desktop creates the native .enl library and its associated data folder for editing, grouping, and citation insertion.
What the RIS format is
RIS, originally associated with Research Information Systems, is a plain-text exchange format for bibliographic records. Tagged lines store fields such as authors, title, journal, year, volume, issue, pages, DOI, abstract, keywords, and reference type.
Web of Science, Scopus, ProQuest, EBSCOhost, Google Scholar, and journal websites commonly provide RIS downloads. Zotero, Mendeley, and other reference managers can also export RIS for transfer between applications.
RIS contains citation metadata, not automatically the cited PDF files. Field tags and mappings vary by provider, so records may have missing authors, incorrect reference types, abbreviated journal names, incomplete page ranges, or poorly encoded characters.
What the ENL format is
.enl is the library-file format used by EndNote Desktop. An EndNote library contains references, groups, notes, searchable metadata, and settings used by EndNote and its word-processing integrations.
A library normally includes LibraryName.enl and a matching LibraryName.Data folder. The folder may contain attachments and internal library resources, so copying only the .enl file can produce an incomplete library. ENL is a proprietary EndNote library format, not a plain-text bibliography format.
How to convert RIS to ENL
EndNote Desktop is the appropriate tool because it reads RIS and writes its own library format.
- Open EndNote Desktop. Create a new library with File → New, or open the existing library that should receive the records.
- Choose File → Import → File and select the
.risfile. - Set Import Option to
RIS. If it is not visible, choose Other Filters, find the RIS import filter, and select it. - Choose a duplicate policy.

UTF-8when the source contains accented characters or the preview shows garbled text. - Click Import. Inspect the imported records, especially their reference types, author names, titles, dates, DOI values, and page fields.
- Save the library with File → Save. EndNote writes the
LibraryName.enlfile and its matchingLibraryName.Datafolder.
For sharing, close the library and use File → Compressed Library to create an .enlx package. This is EndNote’s portable compressed-library format and can include the data folder and attachments. If sending the uncompressed library instead, copy the .enl file and its matching .Data folder together.
Online and alternative tools
EndNote Online can import RIS records into an online EndNote account, but it does not by itself create a local .enl file. A supported EndNote Desktop installation is required to produce that file, typically through synchronization or local import.
Zotero and Mendeley are reputable desktop alternatives for inspecting or importing RIS, but they do not natively export an EndNote .enl library. General web-based RIS converters normally produce formats such as BibTeX, CSV, or RIS rather than the proprietary ENL format; they are therefore not a direct solution. Avoid uploading confidential, unpublished, or licensed citation data to an online service.
Quality and compatibility limits
The conversion transfers the metadata present in the RIS records. It does not retrieve missing PDFs, correct inaccurate source data, or guarantee correct mapping for conference papers, books, web pages, patents, corporate authors, or unusual reference types. Review representative records manually and fix incorrect reference types before generating citations.
Do not edit .enl as text or separate it from its .Data folder. EndNote versions can differ in library compatibility and field behavior; open the result with the same or a newer supported version and keep a backup before upgrading or sharing it.
