What the QIF format is

QIF (Quicken Interchange Format) is a plain-text interchange format for personal-finance and accounting records. Quicken introduced it, and banks, older Microsoft Money versions, bookkeeping programs, and other financial applications may still export it.

A QIF file can contain bank, cash, credit-card, asset, liability, or investment transactions. Depending on the exporter, it may include dates, payees, amounts, categories, memos, transfers, and investment actions. Typical records use markers such as !Type:Bank and end transaction records with ^.

What the PFD format is

In accounting and personal-finance software, PFD generally identifies a program-specific financial-data file. Unlike QIF, PFD has no single broadly adopted interchange specification; different applications can use the extension for different internal structures and field definitions.

When the receiving application supports the relevant PFD variant, the format can preserve structured account data in the form that application expects. Its usefulness therefore depends on the target program, its PFD version, supported account types, and required fields. Check that program’s documentation before converting.

PFD is not PDF. Renaming account.qif to account.pfd does not convert the data, and a PFD file is not automatically a printable document. If the required output is actually PDF, import the QIF into compatible accounting software, create a report, and use File → Print or the program’s PDF export option.

How to convert QIF to PFD

1. Identify the financial application that will open the PFD file. Confirm its exact PFD variant, supported account types, date and currency conventions, and whether it expects one account per file.
2. Copy the original QIF and work from the copy. Open it in a text editor only to check that it contains the expected records; do not modify the structure unless the target documentation requires it.
3. Open the QIF-to-PFD converter on 101convert.com, add the copied QIF file, and select PFD as the output format if that option is available.
4. Start the conversion and save the result with a descriptive name such as checking-2025.pfd. Treat financial data uploaded to any online service according to the service’s privacy terms and your organization’s data-handling rules.
5. Open the target accounting application and use its relevant File → Import or File → Open command. Do not open the PFD in a text editor or assume that another program’s PFD reader is compatible.
6. Compare the imported opening and closing balances, transaction count, dates, amounts, payees, categories, currencies, transfers, and duplicate entries with the source account. Reconcile the account before using the result for tax or financial reporting.

If PFD is not listed as an output format, the target application may be the only valid converter: import QIF through its QIF importer and use its save, backup, or database conversion function to create the required PFD file. Programs such as GnuCash, Quicken, and Moneydance can import QIF in supported versions, but they do not produce a universal PFD format; their native files are application-specific.

Quality and compatibility limits

• QIF may not contain online-banking identifiers, attachments, receipt images, budgets, reconciliation status, encryption, or every investment field used by modern accounting systems.
• Payee names, categories, account identifiers, and transfer links may be normalized, omitted, or recreated differently by the converter.
• Check regional date settings, decimal separators, negative amounts, currency codes, and transfer direction. A day-month versus month-day mismatch can corrupt transaction history without producing an obvious file error.
• Inspect split transactions and investment actions individually; some converters flatten split lines, preserve only the parent transaction, or omit unsupported actions.
• A successful conversion verifies file creation, not accounting accuracy. Keep the original QIF, bank statements, and supporting reports, and validate the PFD data inside the target application.
