Understanding the PSM and PAR file formats

PSM files are Solid Edge Part Sheet Metal files, used primarily in Siemens Solid Edge for designing sheet metal components. These files store 3D CAD data, including geometry, features, and material properties specific to sheet metal parts.

PAR files are Solid Edge Part files, also used in Siemens Solid Edge, but for general 3D part modeling. Unlike PSM, PAR files are not limited to sheet metal and can represent a wide range of mechanical parts.

Converting a PSM file to a PAR file allows you to use sheet metal designs as standard parts, enabling further modifications and integration into assemblies that require non-sheet metal features.

How to convert PSM to PAR

The most reliable way to convert a PSM file to a PAR file is by using Siemens Solid Edge itself. The software provides built-in tools for this conversion:

• Open your PSM file in Solid Edge.
• Go to File → Save As.
• In the Save as type dropdown, select Part Files (*.par).
• Click Save to create the PAR file.

This process will convert your sheet metal part into a standard part file, but note that some sheet metal-specific features may be lost or converted to standard features.

Siemens Solid Edge is the recommended and most effective software for converting PSM to PAR files. Third-party converters are not available due to the proprietary nature of these formats.
