People convert a Wallet pass when a ticket, boarding pass, or loyalty card must be printed, emailed, archived, or opened on a device without Wallet support. PDF preserves a visual copy, but it does not retain the pass’s live updates, NFC behavior, or Wallet integration.
What the PKPASS format is
.pkpass is Apple Wallet’s pass-package format. It is a ZIP-based bundle containing files such as pass.json, images, localization data, a manifest, and a cryptographic signature.
Airline, rail, event, cinema, hotel, retail, and loyalty applications commonly create PKPASS files through Apple PassKit-compatible services. You normally encounter them after tapping an “Add to Apple Wallet” link or downloading a pass from an email or website. Apple Wallet reads the package and can display barcodes, QR codes, dates, locations, alerts, and pass updates.
What the _PDF format is
PDF is a fixed-layout document format designed for printing, sharing, and long-term viewing across operating systems. It can preserve the visible pass design, text, logos, and barcode or QR code in one file.
There is no separate widely supported mobile format called ._pdf; conversion catalogs sometimes label the target as _PDF while meaning ordinary PDF. Export the file as .pdf unless the receiving system specifically requires the literal ._pdf suffix. Renaming ticket.pdf to ticket._pdf does not change its contents, and many PDF readers will no longer recognize it automatically.
How to convert PKPASS to _PDF
Best method: capture the rendered pass and print it
- Open the PKPASS file in Apple Wallet on an iPhone or iPad. On Android, use a pass viewer that supports PKPASS rendering; Android does not provide Apple Wallet itself.
- Display the front and back of the pass and capture each required screen. Include the barcode or QR code at its native display size; do not crop or reduce its resolution.
- Transfer the screenshots to a Mac or Windows computer. On macOS, select them in Preview and choose File → Print → PDF → Save as PDF. On Windows, select the images and choose Print → Microsoft Print to PDF.
- Arrange the pages in the order required by the recipient. A pass with front and back content usually needs two PDF pages.
This method is the most faithful because Apple Wallet performs the layout, localization, and barcode rendering. The resulting PDF is a static copy rather than an active Wallet pass.
Extract the package for manual reconstruction
When Wallet is unavailable, inspect the package with 7-Zip on Windows or Keka on macOS. The command-line equivalent is:
unzip ticket.pkpass -d ticket_contents
Open ticket_contents/pass.json in a text editor and use its fields and image files to recreate the visible pass in LibreOffice Draw, Microsoft Word, or another layout application. Export it through File → Export as PDF or File → Save As → PDF.
The extracted files are source data, not a ready-to-print document. Fields such as primaryFields, secondaryFields, backFields, and barcode data must be placed manually if no compatible renderer is available.
Quality and compatibility limitations
- A PDF cannot receive Wallet updates, trigger location or time-based notifications, use NFC, or preserve the original pass signature.
- Some passes contain a rotating or time-limited barcode. Use the current Wallet display rather than an old extracted image when the barcode will be scanned.
- Printing or screenshotting can reduce barcode contrast and size. Keep the original dimensions, avoid compression, and test the printed or displayed PDF with the relevant scanner.
- PKPASS files may include personal data such as names, booking references, and account identifiers. Avoid uploading them to unfamiliar web converters. General-purpose services such as CloudConvert or Convertio should be used only if their current supported-format list explicitly includes PKPASS; many accept ZIP archives but do not understand Wallet pass structure.
