An OVA is an appliance package, while IMG is usually a raw virtual disk image. This conversion is needed when a virtualization platform, emulator, embedded device, or imaging utility accepts a raw disk file instead of an appliance archive.

What the OVA format is

OVA, or Open Virtual Appliance, is a TAR archive containing an OVF virtual-machine descriptor and one or more virtual disks. The archive may also include a manifest and certificate. VMware products, Oracle VirtualBox, and other OVF-compatible virtualization tools create and import OVA files.

The OVF descriptor stores the virtual machine's hardware configuration, such as memory, CPUs, disk controllers, network adapters, and references to disk files. An OVA is therefore a complete appliance package rather than a disk image that can normally be written directly to a drive.

What the IMG format is

In virtualization, .img commonly identifies a raw disk image: a sector-by-sector representation of a virtual disk without an appliance descriptor or virtualization-specific container metadata. QEMU/KVM, emulators, cloud-image workflows, boot utilities, and some embedded systems use raw images.

Raw IMG files have broad compatibility and do not require a virtual disk container to interpret them. They generally occupy more space than dynamically allocated VMDK or QCOW2 files, and they do not preserve OVA-level settings such as virtual hardware, snapshots, or network configuration.

How to convert OVA to IMG

The reliable desktop method is to extract the OVA, identify its virtual disk, and convert that disk with QEMU's qemu-img utility.

  1. Install QEMU for your operating system and make a working directory.
  2. Extract the appliance archive:

mkdir ova-work
tar -xf appliance.ova -C ova-work

On Windows, open the OVA with an archive utility that supports TAR, or import it into VirtualBox and locate the extracted virtual disk. The directory will normally contain an .ovf file and a disk such as disk.vmdk, disk.vhd, or disk.qcow2.

  1. Inspect the source disk before converting it:

qemu-img info ova-work/disk.vmdk

  1. Convert the disk to a raw IMG file:

qemu-img convert -p -f vmdk -O raw ova-work/disk.vmdk machine.img

Replace vmdk with the actual source format when necessary: use vpc for VHD, qcow2 for QCOW2, and the format reported by qemu-img info. If the OVA contains several disks, convert each referenced disk separately; the resulting IMG files must be attached to the target virtual machine in the same order as the OVF descriptor.

To verify the result, run:

qemu-img info machine.img

The output should identify the file as raw and show its virtual size. You can also import the IMG into a virtualization program as an existing disk, then attach it to a newly created virtual machine with matching firmware, controller type, and operating system settings.

For a no-installation option, 101convert.com can convert supported virtualization files online for free. Uploading an OVA sends its virtual-machine data to a third-party service, so use a local QEMU conversion for confidential or very large appliances.

Compatibility and limitations

Converting only the disk does not reproduce the OVA's virtual hardware configuration. Recreate settings from the .ovf file, including BIOS or UEFI mode, disk controller, CPU architecture, memory, and network adapters.

The guest operating system may fail to boot if the target platform exposes a different controller or firmware type. Windows guests can also require driver reconfiguration or activation after a major virtual-hardware change.

Raw conversion preserves the disk's sectors and filesystem contents but discards snapshots, linked-clone relationships, VMDK-specific metadata, and OVA manifests. A raw IMG can be as large as the disk's full virtual capacity; confirm that the destination has enough space before starting.
