Source format: BMP
BMP (Bitmap) is a raster image format commonly associated with Windows. It stores pixel data with little or no compression, so it is simple and widely supported, but often much larger than newer image formats. BMP files are often used for screenshots, simple graphics, scanned images, and legacy Windows workflows.
Target format: VSD
VSD is the classic Microsoft Visio drawing format used for diagrams such as flowcharts, network maps, org charts, floor plans, and technical schematics. Unlike BMP, VSD is a vector-based document format that can contain shapes, connectors, text, layers, and page settings. It is designed for editable diagrams rather than flat images.
Can bmp be converted to vsd?
Not directly in the usual sense. A BMP is a raster image, while a VSD is a structured diagram file. Most tools cannot turn a bitmap into a fully editable Visio drawing automatically. In practice, you either insert the BMP into Visio as an image or recreate the diagram manually using Visio shapes and connectors.
Best desktop option: Microsoft Visio
- Open Microsoft Visio.
- Create a new diagram or open an existing
.vsdfile. - Use Insert → Pictures to place the
.bmpimage on the page. - If you need an editable diagram, trace the image with Visio shapes, connectors, and text.
- Save the result with File → Save As.
- Choose
.vsdonly if your Visio version supports it; otherwise save as.vsdx, which is the modern Visio format.
Alternative desktop tools
- LibreOffice Draw can place bitmap images and export diagram-like documents, but it does not create native Visio
.vsdfiles with full fidelity. - CorelDRAW and Inkscape can help if you first want to vectorize the BMP, then rebuild the diagram in Visio or another diagram editor.
- Microsoft Visio Viewer can open Visio files for viewing, but it does not convert BMP to VSD.
Online conversion options
Some reputable online converters can handle image-to-Visio workflows, but results are usually limited to embedding the image or producing a basic Visio-compatible file. If you try an online service, confirm that it explicitly supports Visio VSD or VSDX, and review its privacy policy before uploading sensitive content.
Examples of well-known conversion services include CloudConvert and Convertio, but availability of BMP-to-Visio output may vary. In many cases, these services are better suited to converting BMP to another image or vector format first, then rebuilding the diagram in Visio.
Limitations to keep in mind
BMP to VSD conversion is inherently limited because a bitmap does not contain shape, connector, or text structure. A direct conversion cannot reliably infer editable diagram elements from a flat image. If the BMP is a scanned diagram, the best result is usually a recreated Visio drawing rather than an automatic conversion.
If your goal is simply to place the image inside a diagram, embedding the BMP is straightforward. If your goal is full editability, manual reconstruction is usually necessary. For modern Visio workflows, VSDX is generally preferable to VSD because it is the current standard and is better supported in newer versions of Visio.
