Convert VSDX to EDDX

A Visio drawing must be converted when its recipient uses EdrawMax and needs to edit the diagram rather than view a PDF or image. Saving it as .eddx keeps the result in EdrawMax's native editable format.

What VSDX contains

.vsdx is Microsoft Visio's XML-based drawing format, introduced with Visio 2013. It stores one or more diagram pages, shapes, connectors, text, formatting, layers, hyperlinks, and document metadata in a ZIP-based Office Open XML package. Organizations use it for flowcharts, organization charts, floor plans, network diagrams, engineering diagrams, and business-process documentation.

What EDDX contains

.eddx is EdrawMax's native editable diagram format. It can preserve diagram pages, objects, connectors, text, layers, and layout information better than a raster image or PDF, so users can continue editing the imported drawing in EdrawMax. EDDX is a vendor-specific working format, not a general interchange standard; recipients normally need EdrawMax or a compatible Edraw application to open it.

Convert with EdrawMax desktop

1. Install a current desktop version of EdrawMax that lists Visio import support.
2. Open the program and choose File → Import or File → Open, depending on the version, then select the .vsdx file.
3. Allow EdrawMax to convert the Visio pages and inspect every page, connector, label, layer, and embedded object.
4. Choose File → Save As, select EdrawMax Document or the .eddx extension, and save a new copy. Keep the original VSDX file unchanged.

EdrawMax is the most reliable option because it is the application that defines the EDDX format. The exact import and save menu names can differ between desktop releases, but the operation is an import followed by saving the result as EDDX; no PDF, SVG, or image conversion is required.

Use EdrawMax online

EdrawMax Online can be used when the account and current web version provide Visio import and EDDX download:

1. Open EdrawMax Online and sign in if prompted.
2. Use Import or Open to upload the VSDX file.
3. Check the converted diagram in the browser, then use File → Save As or Download and choose .eddx.

Web features and export options vary by subscription and release. Do not upload confidential diagrams to an online service without checking its storage and privacy terms. Generic conversion sites often support VSDX export to PDF, SVG, or PNG but do not produce a genuinely editable EDDX file; use one only when its output list explicitly includes EDDX.

Compatibility limitations

VSDX and EDDX represent diagrams differently, so the conversion is not guaranteed to be lossless. Recheck Visio-specific stencils, custom shapes, containers, themes, data graphics, formulas, hyperlinks, page settings, protection, embedded files, and fonts. Unsupported shapes may be replaced, flattened, or rendered with altered geometry; missing fonts can change text wrapping and connector positions.

Compare the EDDX with the original at normal and print scale, replace missing fonts or shapes, and test links and embedded content before distributing it. Visio macro-enabled files use .vsdm, not VSDX, and macros are not expected to transfer into EDDX. If exact visual fidelity is more important than editability, retain the original VSDX and provide a PDF or SVG alongside the EDDX.
