What the TBZ2 format is
TBZ2, commonly named .tbz2 or .tar.bz2, is a TAR archive compressed with bzip2. TAR stores multiple files and directories; bzip2 reduces the size of that TAR stream. GNU tar, Linux and Unix packaging tools, source-code distribution systems, and backup utilities commonly create it.
A TBZ2 file may contain an application source tree, software package files, documents, or a directory backup. It is not a disk image and does not contain an ISO filesystem until you extract its contents and build one.
What the ISO format is
ISO, usually using the .iso extension, is a sector-oriented image of a disc filesystem, most often ISO 9660 with optional Joliet or Rock Ridge metadata. Operating systems can mount it as a virtual optical disc, and disc-authoring software can burn it to CD, DVD, or compatible optical media.
ISO is suitable when a device, installer, emulator, virtual machine, or disc-writing program requires one mountable image. It is not automatically smaller than TBZ2: the resulting image contains the extracted files and normally has no bzip2 compression.
How to actually convert TBZ2 to ISO
The reliable method is to extract the archive into a staging directory, then create an ISO from that directory. The following commands use GNU tar and xorriso on Linux or macOS:
- Create a clean working directory:
mkdir tbz2-work. - Extract the archive:
tar -xjf package.tbz2 -C tbz2-work. For a file namedpackage.tar.bz2, use that filename instead. - Inspect the extracted layout with
find tbz2-work -maxdepth 2 -type f. Move files if the ISO must have a specific root-level structure. - Create the image:
xorriso -as mkisofs -o package.iso tbz2-work. - Verify the result with
xorriso -indev package.iso -find / -type f -print, or mount the ISO and compare its files with the extracted directory.
genisoimage -o package.iso tbz2-work can replace xorriso on systems where it is installed. On Windows, extract the file with 7-Zip, then use a desktop ISO authoring program or the oscdimg utility from the Windows ADK to create an image from the extracted folder. The built-in online converter on 101convert.com can also process the file without installing software; upload only data that is appropriate for a third-party service.
Quality and compatibility limits
Extraction and ISO creation can change TAR-specific properties such as archive ordering, bzip2 compression, ownership, permissions, symbolic links, hard links, extended attributes, and timestamps. If those properties are required, retain the original TBZ2 and treat the ISO as a distribution copy.
If the goal is to preserve the TBZ2 file itself on optical media, create an ISO containing package.tbz2 rather than extracting it. That produces a disc image for storage, but it does not turn the archive contents into a native ISO filesystem.
