.at3 extension instead of an OpenMG container.
What the OMA format is
OMA is Sony's OpenMG audio container. It commonly holds ATRAC3, ATRAC3plus, or ATRAC Advanced Lossless audio and may include OpenMG DRM metadata. You may encounter it in music libraries created with SonicStage, OpenMG Jukebox, Sony Connect, or older Sony portable audio software.
The extension alone does not identify whether the audio is protected. Files downloaded through older Sony music stores are often encrypted, while files transferred from an unprotected source may be readable by compatible software.
What the AT3 format is
AT3 generally refers to Sony ATRAC3 audio, commonly used by older Sony hardware, PSP software, and applications that expect ATRAC3 rather than an OMA/OpenMG file. It is appropriate when the receiving device specifically lists ATRAC3 or .at3 support.
AT3 is not automatically a higher-quality format. If the source OMA already contains ATRAC3, changing the container or extension may avoid re-encoding; decoding to WAV and encoding again introduces another lossy generation.
How to convert OMA to AT3
First check the source for DRM. A protected OMA file must normally be authorized in the Sony software that created it; renaming .oma to .at3 does not decrypt or convert the audio.
- For a quick attempt without installing software, open the converter on 101convert.com, select the OMA input and AT3 output formats, upload the file, and start the conversion. Download the result only if the service accepts the file and the output plays correctly. DRM-protected OMA files may be rejected or produce no usable output.
- For an unprotected file on a desktop, test whether FFmpeg can decode it:
ffmpeg -i input.oma output.wav. If FFmpeg reports an encrypted stream or an unsupported codec, the file requires authorized Sony software instead. - Open the resulting WAV in an encoder that includes Sony ATRAC3 support, such as a compatible Sony Sound Forge installation with its ATRAC codec. Choose File → Save As, select the ATRAC3 format, set the required bitrate and channel mode, and save as
output.at3. The available extension and container options depend on the installed Sony codec. - If SonicStage or OpenMG Jukebox recognizes the file, use its authorized export or transfer function to create a standard WAV where available, then encode that WAV with an ATRAC3-capable application. Do not use a file extension rename as the conversion step.
Quality and compatibility limits
OMA files can contain different ATRAC variants, and an AT3 target normally means ATRAC3 specifically. ATRAC3plus or ATRAC Advanced Lossless content may need decoding and re-encoding, and some target devices accept only particular bitrates, sampling rates, channel modes, or container variants.
Protected OpenMG files cannot generally be converted by generic audio tools. If authorized playback is possible but direct export is blocked, recording the permitted playback to a new WAV may be the only available route, subject to the software license and applicable law; it reduces quality and should be used only for material you are allowed to copy.
