What the NBF format is

NBF is an older Nokia Backup File created by Nokia PC Suite for storing data copied from compatible Nokia phones. A backup can contain contacts, calendar entries, messages, notes, and other phone data; it is not normally a spreadsheet and may contain several data types in one file.

Nokia PC Suite is the main program associated with this NBF variant. Because NBF is a proprietary backup container, renaming .nbf to .xlsx does not convert it and can make the file harder to identify.

What the XLSX format is

XLSX is the Office Open XML spreadsheet format used by Microsoft Excel, LibreOffice Calc, and many contact-management and data-import tools. It stores data in rows and columns, supports multiple worksheets, filtering, sorting, formatting, and formulas, and is suitable for reviewing or cleaning contact lists.

For address books, XLSX commonly represents one contact per row, with columns such as name, telephone number, email address, company, and postal address.

How to convert NBF to XLSX

Using the online converter

1. Open the NBF-to-XLSX converter on 101convert.com; no software installation is required.
2. Upload the Nokia backup file, select XLSX as the output format, and start the conversion.
3. Download the resulting workbook and open it in Excel or LibreOffice Calc.
4. Check the contact columns, especially telephone numbers, accented names, duplicate records, and empty fields, before using the workbook as your master address book.

Using Nokia software and a spreadsheet application

For older or unusually structured backups, first recover the contacts with Nokia PC Suite rather than treating the NBF as a normal spreadsheet:

1. Install a compatible version of Nokia PC Suite on an offline or legacy Windows system if necessary.
2. Connect the Nokia phone, or use the program's restore function with the original .nbf backup.
3. Restore or synchronize the contacts to a supported address-book application. If the software offers a contacts export, choose CSV or another tabular format.
4. Open the exported file in Excel or LibreOffice Calc and use File → Save As to save it as .xlsx.

Quality and compatibility limits

An NBF may contain more than contacts, while XLSX provides only a tabular destination. Messages, call records, contact photographs, groups, custom fields, and linked calendar data may be omitted or placed in separate worksheets during conversion.

Phone numbers should be formatted as text before saving so leading zeros, plus signs, extensions, and long international numbers are not altered by spreadsheet auto-formatting. If the backup is password-protected, damaged, or created by a different Nokia PC Suite generation, a direct conversion may fail and restoring it with the matching Nokia software is usually required.
