What the NBF format is

In the contacts and address books category, NBF means a Nokia Backup File created by older Nokia PC Suite versions. It can contain phone contacts along with other backed-up phone data such as calendar entries, messages, and settings. NBF files are commonly encountered after copying an old Nokia phone backup from a computer or migrating data from a legacy handset.

The file is a structured backup container, not a contact list that standard PDF software can edit. The contacts may be stored internally in Nokia-specific records, so changing the filename extension or opening the file in a word processor will not convert it.

What the PDF format is

PDF stores pages with fixed layout, fonts, tables, and images, making it suitable for printing contact directories, sending a read-only copy, and preserving an address book for long-term reference. PDF viewers are available on most desktop and mobile systems, but a PDF is not normally suitable for importing contacts back into a phone.

Use PDF when the required result is a human-readable contact list. Use vCard (.vcf) or a compatible CSV file instead when the contacts must remain editable or be imported into another address book.

How to actually convert NBF to PDF

1. Make a copy of the original .nbf file and keep the original unchanged.
2. Open the NBF converter on the 101convert website; it can be used for free without installing software.
3. Upload the NBF file, choose PDF as the output format, and start the conversion.
4. Download the resulting PDF and check that contact names, telephone numbers, email addresses, and non-Latin characters are present.

Direct conversion is appropriate when the converter can read the particular Nokia backup variant. An NBF file may contain several data types, so the resulting PDF may include only contacts or may present the extracted backup data in a basic layout.

Extract contacts first when direct conversion fails

1. Install a compatible copy of Nokia PC Suite or use NbuExplorer, a desktop utility that can inspect older Nokia backup containers.
2. Open a copy of the NBF file and locate the contacts section. If the utility offers an export option, save the contacts as vCard files such as contacts.vcf.
3. Import the VCF data into an address-book application that supports printing, such as Mozilla Thunderbird, or open it with a compatible contacts manager.
4. Select the required contacts and use Print → Print to PDF or the operating system's PDF printer.

If the backup is encrypted, damaged, or tied to a Nokia PC Suite version that is no longer available, extraction may be required before any PDF can be generated. Do not overwrite the only copy while testing recovery tools.

Quality and compatibility limitations

NBF-to-PDF conversion preserves contact information only to the extent that the reader understands the Nokia backup structure. Contact photos, groups, custom fields, linked phone numbers, and ordering may be omitted or rearranged. Review multiple records after conversion rather than checking only the first page.

PDF output is static: it does not retain the original contact database structure, search fields, or phone synchronization capability. Keep the extracted .vcf or another structured export alongside the PDF if the address book may need to be edited or restored later.
