A legacy scheduling system may require an MPX file even though the plan was created in Microsoft Project as an MPP file. This conversion is mainly needed for exchange with older software, not for normal use in current Microsoft Project.
MPP and MPX formats
MPP is the proprietary native project-plan format used by Microsoft Project desktop, including Project Professional. An .mpp file can store tasks, milestones, dependencies, resources, assignments, calendars, baselines, custom fields, views, and scheduling settings.
MPX means Microsoft Project Exchange format. It is a legacy, record-based text interchange format used by older Microsoft Project releases and compatible planning applications. Its practical advantages are simple text-based exchange and support in some legacy systems; it is not a full-fidelity replacement for an MPP file and is not necessarily smaller.
Convert with Microsoft Project 2007 or earlier
Microsoft Project 2007 and earlier can export MPX directly. Current Microsoft Project releases generally no longer provide MPX as a save format.
- Make a copy of the source
.mppfile. - If the file was created in a newer Project release, open it in that release and save a compatibility copy in the Project 2007 format. Use File → Save As and select the Project 2007
.mppformat. - Open the compatibility copy in Microsoft Project 2007.
- Select File → Save As, then choose Save as type → MPX (*.mpx).
- Save the file as, for example,
schedule.mpx, accept any export warnings, and test it in the receiving application.
Project 2007 is out of support. Use an appropriately licensed installation and avoid opening untrusted project files on an unpatched legacy system.
Convert locally with MPXJ
MPXJ is an open-source Java library with a command-line converter that can read many MPP versions and write MPX. It is useful when Microsoft Project 2007 is unavailable or when conversions must run locally in a repeatable process.
After downloading the MPXJ converter package and installing a compatible Java runtime, run the bundled conversion JAR with the input and output paths. The exact JAR filename varies by release; a typical command is:
java -jar mpxj-convert.jar input.mpp output.mpx
Check the documentation packaged with the MPXJ release for its exact filename and options. Keep the conversion local when the plan contains confidential task names, client information, resource rates, or staffing data.
Online conversion option
For occasional files without sensitive data, Aspose.Tasks offers a browser-based converter that supports MPP and MPX formats. Upload the MPP file, select MPX as the output format, download the result, and review the provider's retention and data-processing terms before uploading project data. Do not treat an online conversion as a backup: retain the original .mpp file.
Compatibility checks
MPX predates many Microsoft Project capabilities. Custom fields, enterprise and Project Server metadata, visual formatting, reports, VBA code, advanced calendars, newer scheduling properties, and rich task-note formatting can be omitted, simplified, or mapped differently.
Tasks, dates, durations, predecessor links, resources, and basic assignments usually transfer most reliably, but the receiving program determines how imported records are interpreted. Compare task and resource counts, milestone dates, dependency links, assignments, calendars, and baseline data after import.
Older MPX readers can have character-set limitations. Test accented characters and non-Latin task or resource names, and keep the original MPP as the authoritative project plan.

Frequently asked questions
Will converting MPP to MPX keep all my Microsoft Project data?
No, some newer or advanced MPP features may be omitted or simplified because MPX is a legacy interchange format. Basic tasks, resources, assignments, dates, and dependencies are more likely to transfer than custom fields, newer scheduling settings, or specialized project data.
Will my MPP formatting and views be preserved in MPX?
No, MPP views, print layouts, visual formatting, and other presentation details are generally not preserved. MPX primarily carries project data rather than the complete appearance of the original plan.
Can I edit an MPX file after converting it from MPP?
Yes, an MPX file can remain editable as project data in software that supports the legacy format, but it is not a full-fidelity copy of the original MPP plan. Converting it back may not restore information that MPX could not represent.
Why are some tasks, fields, or dates wrong after converting MPP to MPX?
This usually happens when the MPP plan uses fields or scheduling features that have no direct MPX equivalent, or when date and regional settings are interpreted differently. Review calendars, constraints, custom fields, and task dates after importing the MPX file.
