Understanding MDF and BWI file formats

MDF (Mirror Disk File) is a proprietary disc image file format created by Alcohol 120%, typically used to store the contents of CDs or DVDs. It is often accompanied by an MDS file, which contains metadata about the disc structure.

BWI (BlindWrite Image) is another disc image format, developed by VSO Software for use with their BlindWrite suite. BWI files are used to store exact copies of optical discs, including data, audio, and copy protection information.

How to convert MDF to BWI

Direct conversion from MDF to BWI is not commonly supported by most disc image tools. The typical process involves first converting the MDF file to a more widely supported format, such as ISO or BIN/CUE, and then converting that file to BWI.

Recommended software for conversion

• UltraISO: This tool can open MDF files and save them as ISO or BIN/CUE. Use File → Open to load your MDF, then File → Save As to export as ISO or BIN.
• BlindWrite: Once you have an ISO or BIN/CUE, use BlindWrite to create a BWI file. Open BlindWrite, select Write or Copy, and choose your ISO or BIN/CUE as the source, then select BWI as the output format.

Step-by-step conversion process

1. Open your MDF file in UltraISO.
2. Export the image as ISO or BIN/CUE using File → Save As.
3. Launch BlindWrite and select the Copy or Write option.
4. Load the ISO or BIN/CUE file as the source.
5. Choose BWI as the output format and start the conversion.

Important notes

• Some copy-protected discs may not convert perfectly due to format limitations.
• Always use legal and authorized copies of disc images.
