What the KML format is
KML (Keyhole Markup Language) is an XML-based geographic format used by Google Earth, Google My Maps, Google Earth Pro, and many GIS applications. It stores points, routes, tracks, areas, names, descriptions, styles, and sometimes timestamps and elevation. A KML file can contain several placemarks and geometry types, but a FIT activity normally requires an ordered track or route rather than map styling or descriptive content.
What the FIT format is
FIT (Flexible and Interoperable Data Transfer) is a compact binary format developed for sports devices and activity platforms. It can store timestamped GPS positions, elevation, distance, speed, heart rate, cadence, power, laps, sessions, and device metadata. Its structured records and small file size suit Garmin devices and fitness analysis software, but FIT is less suitable than KML for displaying arbitrary map annotations or complex geographic shapes.
How to convert KML to FIT
GPSBabel is the practical desktop option for this conversion. Install a current version for Windows, macOS, or Linux, then use its graphical interface:
- Open GPSBabel and select File as the input type.
- Choose the KML input format, select the source file such as
route.kml, and enable track or route filtering if the file contains unrelated placemarks. - Select File as the output type and choose
Garmin FIT Activityor the equivalent FIT output entry shown by your version. - Choose an output filename such as
activity.fitand start the conversion.
From a terminal, the equivalent GPSBabel command is:
gpsbabel -i kml -f route.kml -o garmin_fit -F activity.fit
On versions that expose a different FIT format identifier, run gpsbabel -^3 and use the exact identifier listed for Garmin FIT output. You can also convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software.
Quality and compatibility limitations
A KML containing only coordinates can produce a valid track, but it cannot create heart-rate, cadence, power, or other sensor records that were never present in the source. If the KML has no timestamps, the FIT file may contain position and elevation data without a meaningful elapsed time, speed profile, or activity start time. KML folders, styles, descriptions, polygons, and unsupported placemark types may be discarded.
Before sending the result to a device or fitness service, inspect the FIT file in software that can display its track, distance, elevation, and timestamps. Garmin devices may reject files whose record structure is not appropriate for the intended activity type; a route-navigation FIT file and a recorded-activity FIT file are not interchangeable in every application.
