Convert JSO to CSO

CSO is supported more consistently than the older JSO format by PSP custom firmware and emulators such as PPSSPP. Converting a JSO game image is therefore useful when the target software cannot open JSO, but the conversion must decompress and recompress the image; changing the filename extension is not enough.

What the JSO format is

JSO, also called JISO, is a compressed image format for PlayStation Portable UMD data. It stores the disc image in compressed blocks to reduce storage requirements and was produced by older PSP utilities, including JISO and PSP ISO Compressor. Support is less consistent than support for ISO and CSO.

What the CSO format is

CSO, originally called CISO, is a block-compressed ISO format widely used for PSP game images. It is supported by many PSP custom-firmware loaders and emulators, including PPSSPP. CSO files are usually smaller than ISO files, but stronger compression can increase loading time or cause streaming problems on older PSP hardware.

How to convert JSO to CSO

Using PSP ISO Compressor

1. Install PSP ISO Compressor from a trusted software archive. Use a release that explicitly lists JSO or JISO support; this is an older Windows utility, so avoid unofficial repackaged installers.
2. Open the program and select the JSO file as the source. Choose ISO as the decompression or output format, then create an intermediate ISO.
3. Load the resulting ISO again, select CSO as the destination format, and choose a moderate compression level. A mid-range setting is a practical starting point; maximum compression is not always fastest on a real PSP.
4. Save the CSO under a new filename and keep the original JSO and intermediate ISO until testing is complete.
5. Open the CSO in PPSSPP or the intended PSP loader. Test booting, savedata, menus, and any streaming-heavy sections before deleting the source or ISO.

Some PSP ISO Compressor builds provide a direct format-conversion option. If that option accepts JSO as the input and CSO as the output, it performs the same decompress-and-recompress process without requiring a separately saved ISO.

Using a two-stage desktop workflow

If the installed JSO utility cannot write CSO, use it to extract the JSO to ISO, then compress the ISO with a current ISO-to-CSO tool such as maxcso:

maxcso game.iso -o game.cso

Replace the filenames with the actual paths. The first utility must explicitly support JSO/JISO decompression; maxcso is used for the ISO-to-CSO stage, not for guessing or repairing an unsupported JSO file. A graphical CISO/ISO compression utility can be used instead if its particular release documents JSO input and CSO output.

Compatibility and quality limits

The conversion normally preserves the UMD image data because it changes compression, not the game’s audio, video, or executable content. It cannot repair a truncated or damaged JSO: verify that the source opens and, where possible, compare its checksum before conversion.

Do not rename game.jso to game.cso. JSO and CSO use different headers and block layouts, so a renamed file remains JSO and will generally fail to load.

CSO is not automatically faster than ISO. If the converted game stutters, pauses during streamed data, or has longer loading times, rebuild it with a lower compression level or use the ISO. Some games and loaders also have individual compatibility issues, so test the exact target device or emulator.

Reputable online converters are uncommon for JSO and CSO. PSP images are large, many web services do not recognize JSO headers, and uploading a game image creates privacy and legal concerns; a local desktop workflow is the practical option. Convert only disc images you are legally entitled to copy.
