A raw virtual disk image may need conversion when a hypervisor or appliance-management tool accepts OVF rather than a standalone disk file. The process is not a filename change: the IMG disk must be placed in a virtual machine definition and exported as an OVF appliance.

What the IMG format is

In virtualization, .img usually identifies a raw disk image: a sector-by-sector representation of a virtual hard disk without a hypervisor-specific container or appliance descriptor. The image can contain a complete operating system, partition table, boot loader, and file systems.

QEMU, KVM tooling, Xen utilities, cloud-image builders, embedded-system tools, and disk-imaging programs can create raw IMG files. You may encounter one when importing a cloud image, migrating a VM, restoring a virtual disk, or receiving a disk image from a virtualization platform. The extension is not a complete specification, so verify that the file is a hard-disk image rather than a floppy or optical-disc image before proceeding.

What the OVF format is

OVF, the Open Virtualization Format, describes a virtual machine in an XML .ovf descriptor. An OVF package normally includes one or more virtual disk files and may include a manifest, machine hardware settings, network definitions, storage-controller information, and metadata.

OVF is designed for moving appliances between virtualization products such as VMware products, VirtualBox, and other OVF-capable platforms. It preserves VM-level configuration that a standalone IMG file does not contain. An OVA file is a single archive containing the OVF descriptor and its associated files; exporting to OVF normally produces a folder or set of files instead.

How to actually convert IMG to OVF

VirtualBox is a practical desktop method because it can convert a raw disk, attach it to a temporary VM, and export that VM as an OVF appliance.

  1. Make a backup of the IMG file and ensure no process is writing to it. The following commands assume a raw hard-disk image named disk.img.
  2. Convert the raw image to a VirtualBox disk container:
VBoxManage convertfromraw disk.img disk.vdi --format VDI
  3. Create a temporary VM:
    VBoxManage createvm --name ImportedIMG --register
VBoxManage modifyvm ImportedIMG --memory 2048 --firmware bios
  4. Create a storage controller and attach the converted disk:
VBoxManage storagectl ImportedIMG --name SATA --add sata --controller IntelAhci
VBoxManage storageattach ImportedIMG --storagectl SATA --port 0 --device 0 --type hdd --medium disk.vdi
  5. Start the VM and confirm that the guest boots. If the original system requires UEFI, change the firmware setting before starting it:
    VBoxManage modifyvm ImportedIMG --firmware efi
  6. Shut down the guest cleanly, then export the VM as OVF:
    VBoxManage export ImportedIMG --output imported.ovf

The same workflow is available graphically: create a VM, choose the existing disk.vdi as its virtual hard disk, configure its firmware and controllers, then use File → Export Appliance and select OVF instead of OVA. VirtualBox exports the descriptor and the appliance disk files required by the OVF package.

For an online attempt without installing software, the converter on 101convert.com can be used where IMG and OVF virtualization conversion is supported. Upload the disk image, choose OVF as the output, and download the generated package; large images may exceed browser-upload or service-size limits.

Compatibility and limitations

Converting the container does not fix guest operating-system incompatibilities. A system installed for BIOS may fail under UEFI, and a guest configured for IDE, SCSI, or VirtIO may need its storage controller changed or its drivers installed before it will boot on the destination hypervisor.

The exported OVF describes the VM created during the process; it cannot infer the original VM's CPU count, RAM allocation, network adapters, snapshots, or special devices from a raw IMG file. Set those values manually before export.

The disk data is generally preserved sector-for-sector during raw-to-VDI conversion, but the exported disk may use a different container format and allocated size. Check the OVF package by importing it into a test VM, and retain the original IMG until the imported system has been verified.
