How to convert gdb.zip to csv file

A .gdb.zip file is commonly a compressed Garmin GPS database, while CSV is accepted by spreadsheets, databases, and many GIS tools. Conversion is useful when you need to inspect waypoints or coordinates in Excel, import them into another data system, or share them as plain tabular data.

What the GDB.ZIP format is

.gdb.zip normally contains a Garmin MapSource or BaseCamp database with a .gdb extension. Garmin MapSource and older versions of Garmin BaseCamp create GDB files containing waypoints, routes, tracks, names, descriptions, and coordinate data. The ZIP layer only compresses the database; it is not the actual GPS format.

The extension can also refer to a zipped Esri File Geodatabase. After extraction, that format appears as a directory ending in .gdb and contains GIS feature classes rather than Garmin navigation data. Identify the extracted contents before choosing a converter.

What the CSV format is

CSV stores tabular records as plain text, with fields separated by commas or another delimiter. A GPS export commonly contains columns such as name, latitude, longitude, elevation, description, route, or track information.

CSV opens in Excel, LibreOffice Calc, database software, Python, and GIS applications. It is easier to inspect and exchange than a proprietary GPS database, but it does not inherently preserve the hierarchy and geometry behavior of Garmin routes and tracks.

How to actually convert GDB.ZIP to CSV

Garmin GDB files with GPSBabel

  1. Make a backup of the original .gdb.zip file.
  2. Extract the ZIP archive with your operating system or a ZIP utility. The result should contain a Garmin .gdb file. Do not rename an Esri geodatabase directory and treat it as a Garmin file.
  3. Install GPSBabel, then run this command from a terminal:
gpsbabel -i garmin_gdb -f input.gdb -o csv -F output.csv

Replace input.gdb with the extracted filename. GPSBabel generally writes waypoint data to CSV; route and track structures may not map completely to the CSV output.

For a graphical workflow, open the GDB in GPSBabel, set the input type to Garmin MapSource or GDB, select the extracted file, choose CSV as the output type, specify output.csv, and start the conversion. If GPSBabel cannot read the file, open it in Garmin BaseCamp or MapSource first and export it as GPX, then convert the GPX with GPSBabel.

gpsbabel -i gpx -f converted.gpx -o csv -F output.csv

Online conversion

You can upload the .gdb.zip file to 101convert.com and choose CSV as the output format to convert it without installing software. If the service requires an extracted database, unzip the archive first and upload the contained .gdb file.

Esri File Geodatabase archives

If extraction produces a directory such as places.gdb containing GIS database files, use GDAL rather than GPSBabel. List the layers first:

ogrinfo places.gdb

Export a selected layer to CSV:

ogr2ogr -f CSV output_folder places.gdb layer_name -lco GEOMETRY=AS_XY

GEOMETRY=AS_XY writes point coordinates as separate columns when the layer contains point features. For line or polygon layers, CSV cannot preserve full geometry reliably; use GeoPackage, GeoJSON, or another spatial format instead.

Quality and compatibility limits

  • CSV has no universal encoding, delimiter, or coordinate standard. Confirm whether the output uses commas, semicolons, decimal degrees, and UTF-8.
  • Open the result in a plain-text editor or spreadsheet and verify that latitude and longitude columns have not been converted to dates or rounded excessively.
  • Garmin routes and tracks can contain ordered points and navigation instructions that a flat CSV cannot represent cleanly. Keep the original GDB or export a GPX copy if that structure must remain editable.
  • Large coordinate values, commas in descriptions, quotation marks, and line breaks must be correctly quoted in the CSV. A spreadsheet may display these fields correctly even when a basic custom script does not.
