Convert STA to XLS

A legacy reporting system or business application may require an Excel 97–2003 workbook instead of a Statistica spreadsheet. Converting the file also makes tabular results easier to share, edit, and archive, provided the source is actually a Statistica .sta file.

What the STA format is

.sta is an ambiguous extension. One common use is a Statistica spreadsheet associated with StatSoft, TIBCO Statistica, or later Statistica installations. Such files can contain worksheet values, variable definitions, formulas, labels, formatting, charts, and Statistica-specific metadata.

Other statistical, laboratory, instrument, and status-data programs also use .sta. Identify the program that created the file before converting it; renaming the extension or relying only on the filename cannot establish its internal format.

What the XLS format is

.xls is Microsoft Excel's legacy binary workbook format, used mainly by Excel 97–2003 and older software integrations. It supports worksheets, formulas, charts, sorting, filtering, and printing, and remains useful when the receiving system does not accept .xlsx.

An XLS worksheet is limited to 65,536 rows and 256 columns. It also lacks many features supported by modern XLSX workbooks, so choose XLS only when compatibility with legacy software requires it.

Convert with Statistica

1. Open the file in the Statistica version that created it, or in a later version that supports the file's format, using File → Open.
2. Check the worksheets, row and column counts, missing values, dates, formulas, labels, calculated variables, and charts. Remove or copy any worksheets that should not be included in the export.
3. Use File → Save As or the spreadsheet's File → Export command. Select Microsoft Excel 97–2003 Workbook (*.xls) or the equivalent Excel 97–2003 option, then save the output with an .xls extension.
4. Open the resulting workbook in Microsoft Excel or LibreOffice Calc. Compare row counts, representative values, dates, decimal separators, formulas, charts, and important formatting with the original.

Menu names and supported export formats vary by Statistica release. If XLS is absent from Save As, look under the spreadsheet export commands or install a compatible Statistica version. Do not rename filename.sta to filename.xls; changing the suffix does not convert the file's internal format.

Use CSV when direct XLS export is unavailable

1. In Statistica, export each required worksheet through File → Export or File → Save As as .csv.
2. Open the CSV in Excel or LibreOffice Calc and select the correct delimiter, text encoding, decimal separator, and column types in the import dialog.
3. Save the imported data through File → Save As as Excel 97–2003 Workbook (*.xls).

CSV retains cell values but discards formulas, multiple worksheets, charts, cell formatting, variable labels, and Statistica analysis metadata. It can also change dates, leading zeroes, long numbers, and values containing delimiter characters unless the import settings are checked carefully.

Online conversion options

Online support for Statistica STA files is inconsistent because the extension has several unrelated meanings. Zamzar and CloudConvert are reasonable services to check, but upload a file only if the current conversion page explicitly accepts the specific STA variant and lists XLS as the output. A service that merely accepts an .sta filename may interpret it incorrectly.

Do not send confidential research, patient, customer, survey, or instrument data to a third-party converter. For sensitive files, convert locally with Statistica, LibreOffice, or another software package that can first read the actual STA format.

Compatibility and quality checks

Statistica-specific analysis results, macros, variable labels, charts, workbook metadata, and specialized objects may be lost or altered during XLS export. Formulas using Statistica-specific functions may not work in Excel or may recalculate differently. A CSV intermediate removes substantially more structure than direct export.

Check that the source does not exceed 65,536 rows or 256 columns before selecting XLS. If it does, use XLSX, CSV, or a database format instead. Preserve the original .sta file, record the software and export settings used, and compare calculated values after conversion when date, locale, or decimal conventions differ.
