.py file may need conversion when Python code must be opened or run on a TI-Nspire calculator, which uses .tns documents. This is not a normal source-to-source conversion: a TNS file is a TI-Nspire document container that can hold a Python programming page and its code.
What the PY format is
.py is the standard filename extension for a Python source file. It is created by Python editors and development environments such as IDLE, Visual Studio Code, PyCharm, and basic text editors. The file contains readable Python statements, imports, functions, classes, and comments; it is normally executed by a Python interpreter rather than converted to another programming language.
What the TNS format is
.tns is the native document format used by TI-Nspire software and TI-Nspire graphing calculators. A TNS document can contain calculator pages, notes, lists, graphs, and Python programming pages. It is useful when code must be transferred to a compatible TI-Nspire CX II or TI-Nspire CX II CAS device, edited in TI-Nspire software, or distributed as part of a calculator document.
TNS is a structured application document, not a portable Python source format. Its Python content runs only within the Python implementation provided by supported TI-Nspire software or hardware.
How to convert PY to TNS
- Check that the target calculator or desktop application supports Python. Standard TI-Nspire CX hardware without Python support cannot run a Python page simply because the file has a
.tnsextension. - Open TI-Nspire Student Software, TI-Nspire CX Premium Teacher Software, or compatible TI-Nspire desktop software and create a new document with File → New Document.
- Add a Python programming page using Insert → Add Python → New, or the equivalent Python-page command in the installed version.
- Open the
.pyfile in a text editor, copy its source code, and paste it into the TI-Nspire Python editor. Save the document as a.tnsfile with File → Save or File → Save As. - Run the code in the TI-Nspire editor and correct unsupported imports, syntax, or hardware-specific operations before transferring the document. Send the finished document through the TI-Nspire software using the device connection and document-transfer command.
For an automated attempt without installing software, you can use the free converter on 101convert.com. A generic converter cannot guarantee a usable result because creating a valid TNS document requires embedding the source in a TI-Nspire Python page and preserving the document structure.
Compatibility and limitations
TI-Nspire Python is not identical to a full desktop Python installation. Standard-library coverage, third-party packages, filesystem access, graphics behavior, and available hardware interfaces differ, so code that runs in CPython may need changes. Imports such as numpy, pandas, or project-local modules generally will not work unless the TI-Nspire environment specifically provides them.
Copying a .py file and renaming it to .tns does not convert it; the renamed file will not have the internal document structure required by TI-Nspire software. Keep the original .py file for editing and treat the .tns file as the calculator-compatible document.
