Converting MEF to ARW is uncommon, as both are raw formats tied to specific camera brands. However, you might need to convert for compatibility with certain Sony software or workflows that require ARW files. Note that converting between raw formats may result in loss of some metadata or camera-specific information.

How to convert MEF to ARW

Direct conversion from MEF to ARW is not natively supported by most software, as both formats are proprietary. The best approach is to convert MEF to a universal raw or high-quality format (like DNG or TIFF), then, if necessary, convert to ARW using specialized tools. However, converting back to ARW is rarely supported and may not preserve all raw data.

Recommended software for MEF to ARW conversion

• Adobe DNG Converter: Converts MEF files to the open DNG format, which is widely supported and preserves raw data. Use Select Folder to choose your MEF files, then Convert.
• RawTherapee or darktable: Open-source raw editors that can process MEF files and export them as high-quality TIFF or JPEG files. Use File → Export to save your processed image.

There is currently no mainstream software that converts MEF directly to ARW. If ARW is required, consider exporting to TIFF and then using Sony's Imaging Edge software for further processing, though it will not recreate a true ARW file.
