Source format: MCPR
MCPR is a proprietary replay file format used by Minecraft replay tools, especially Replay Mod. It stores replay data such as camera movement, player actions, world state, and timing information so the session can be viewed and edited later inside the mod or compatible tools. It is not a video file, so it cannot be treated like a normal media format.
Target format: AVI
AVI (Audio Video Interleave) is a classic video container format supported by many editors and players. It is often used for compatibility or as an intermediate editing format, but it is usually less efficient than modern containers such as MP4 or MKV.
Can MCPR be converted directly to AVI?
No. An .mcpr file must first be opened and rendered in the Minecraft replay software that created it. After that, the rendered video can be saved or transcoded to AVI if needed. A generic file converter cannot read MCPR replay data directly.
How to convert MCPR to AVI
- Open the replay in Replay Mod or the compatible tool that created the
.mcprfile. - Load the replay and set the camera path, resolution, frame rate, and any visual effects you want.
- Use the mod’s export or render function, usually found in the replay viewer under a menu such as Replay Viewer → Export or Replay Viewer → Render, to create a video.
- If the tool offers AVI export, choose it. If not, export to a high-quality intermediate format such as MP4, MKV, or an image sequence.
- If the result is not already AVI, convert the rendered file to AVI with a desktop converter such as FFmpeg.
Example ffmpeg command
Use FFmpeg to transcode a rendered video to AVI:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 output.avi
If you need a specific codec for compatibility, choose one explicitly. For example, ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:v mpeg4 -q:v 5 -c:a mp3 output.avi.
Desktop software options
Replay Mod is the correct tool for rendering the MCPR replay itself. For the video conversion step, FFmpeg is the most reliable option because it gives precise control over codecs and containers. HandBrake is easy to use for general video conversion, but it is better known for MP4 and MKV output than AVI. VLC can also convert some videos, but it is less dependable for batch or high-quality conversion than FFmpeg.
Online converter options
Online converters cannot convert MCPR directly because they do not understand Minecraft replay files. If you already rendered the replay to a standard video file, reputable online video converters may be able to output AVI. However, desktop software is usually safer for privacy, quality, and file size limits.
Quality and compatibility notes
The final AVI quality depends on the replay render settings, including resolution, frame rate, shader usage, and codec choice. AVI can hold high-quality video, but file sizes may be large and some AVI encodings are less compatible than MP4. If you want the best editing workflow, render the replay to a high-quality intermediate file first and convert to AVI only when you need that container.
