Free online MBX to XLSX converter

MBX files store email messages, while XLSX is required by spreadsheet software for sorting, filtering, reporting, and sharing message metadata. Converting the mailbox extracts fields such as sender, recipient, date, subject, and body into spreadsheet rows.

What the MBX format is

MBX is a mailbox format associated primarily with Qualcomm Eudora and other older email tools. An MBX file normally contains multiple messages in one mailbox, with message headers and body text stored together; Eudora may also create a matching .toc table-of-contents file.

You usually encounter MBX files after exporting or recovering mail from Eudora, migrating an old mail archive, or receiving an email backup from a legacy system. The file is not normally a spreadsheet, so conversion means extracting email data rather than changing a table format.

What the XLSX format is

XLSX is the XML-based workbook format used by Microsoft Excel, LibreOffice Calc, and compatible spreadsheet applications. It supports separate columns, filters, sorting, formulas, worksheets, UTF-8 text, and larger datasets than older .xls files.

An XLSX mailbox export is useful for creating contact lists, searching subjects, reviewing correspondence dates, building reports, or supplying structured data to another application. Email attachments are generally not represented inside the workbook unless the conversion tool explicitly exports their filenames or saves them separately.

How to actually convert MBX to XLSX

Using the online converter

1. Open the MBX conversion tool on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the mailbox file, such as Archive.mbx.
3. Choose XLSX as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the resulting workbook and open it in Excel or LibreOffice Calc.
5. Check several rows against the original messages, especially dates, non-ASCII characters, multiline bodies, and empty fields.

For private or regulated mail, use an offline workflow instead of uploading the archive.

Using desktop mail-conversion software

A dedicated mailbox converter such as Aid4Mail can read Eudora MBX files and export message fields to CSV. Select the MBX mailbox as the source, choose a tabular export containing fields such as Date, From, To, Cc, Subject, and Body, and save the result as messages.csv. Open that file in LibreOffice Calc or Excel, then use File → Save As and select Excel 2007–365 (*.xlsx).

Using a local Python workflow

For an MBX file that follows the standard mbox message layout, install the required packages:

Run it with python mbx_to_xlsx.py. This script handles ordinary mbox-style MBX files; proprietary Eudora variants may require dedicated mail software if messages are not detected correctly.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The conversion can preserve message metadata and readable text, but it does not turn email into a fully functional mail archive. HTML formatting, inline images, signatures, threading, labels, read status, and attachments may be simplified, omitted, or placed in separate files.

Keep the original MBX and its companion .toc file until the workbook has been checked. If dates appear as plain text, use the spreadsheet application's date parsing or import settings; converting them blindly can change time zones or day-month ordering. Large message bodies can also make the workbook unwieldy, so export only the fields required for analysis when possible.
