Understanding DOTM and TMV file formats

DOTM files are Microsoft Word Macro-Enabled Template files. They are used to create new Word documents with pre-defined formatting, styles, and macros (automated tasks written in VBA). DOTM files are commonly used in business environments to standardize document creation and automate repetitive tasks.

TMV files are TableMaker Table files, primarily associated with the TableMaker software, which is used for creating and managing tabular data. TMV is a less common format and is not natively supported by Microsoft Word or most mainstream office applications.

How to convert DOTM to TMV

Direct conversion from DOTM to TMV is not supported by mainstream software, as these formats serve very different purposes. However, you can follow a two-step process:

1. Open the DOTM file in Microsoft Word and save the content as a CSV or XLSX file using File → Save As and selecting the desired format.
2. Import the CSV or XLSX file into TableMaker or another application that supports TMV export, then save or export the file as TMV.

Recommended software for conversion

• Microsoft Word: For opening and exporting DOTM files to CSV or XLSX.
• TableMaker: For importing CSV/XLSX and saving as TMV.
• Universal file converters (such as ABC Amber Text Converter or File Viewer Plus): These may support intermediate conversions if direct import/export is not available.

Step-by-step conversion process

1. Open your DOTM file in Microsoft Word.
2. Go to File → Save As and choose CSV or XLSX as the output format.
3. Open TableMaker and use File → Import to load the CSV/XLSX file.
4. Once the data is imported, use File → Save As or Export to save the file in TMV format.

Important notes

• Macros and advanced formatting in DOTM files will not be preserved in TMV, as TMV is designed for tabular data only.
• Manual adjustment may be required to ensure data is correctly formatted after conversion.
