Convert CSV to XLSM

An Excel template, reporting system, or recipient may require a macro-enabled workbook instead of plain text data. Converting the file creates a workbook that can be formatted, calculated, shared, and saved with VBA macros, although a CSV itself contains no macros.

What CSV contains

CSV (comma-separated values) is a plain-text tabular format used by databases, accounting systems, reporting tools, contact managers, and devices that exchange structured records. Each line normally represents a row, and separators such as commas, semicolons, or tabs divide fields; quotation marks allow separators and line breaks inside a field.

CSV stores values and limited text structure, but not worksheets, cell formatting, formulas, charts, filters, data validation, or VBA. The .csv extension does not guarantee comma separation: regional settings and the exporting application may use another delimiter.

What XLSM contains

XLSM is Microsoft Excel’s Office Open XML macro-enabled workbook format. It can contain multiple worksheets, formulas, formatting, charts, tables, pivot tables, external links, and embedded VBA project data.

Saving a CSV as XLSM creates the workbook container, but it does not automatically add macros. To retain or add VBA, start with an existing .xlsm template or create the code in Excel, then save using the macro-enabled format. Excel may block macros from files downloaded from the internet; enable them only when the source is trusted.

Convert with Microsoft Excel

1. Open Excel and select Data → From Text/CSV. Choose the CSV file rather than opening it directly when delimiter, encoding, or data types need control.
2. In the import preview, select the correct file origin or UTF-8 encoding and delimiter. Check that quoted fields, multiline fields, dates, decimal separators, and column boundaries are interpreted correctly.
3. Set sensitive columns such as account numbers, postal codes, product codes, and long identifiers to Text so Excel does not remove leading zeroes, convert values to dates, or round long numbers.
4. Choose Load, or Transform Data to clean the data in Power Query before loading it to a worksheet.
5. Select File → Save As, choose Excel Macro-Enabled Workbook (*.xlsm), enter a filename, and save. Do not merely rename .csv to .xlsm; the internal file structure is different.
6. Reopen the saved workbook and test formulas, tables, filters, charts, and any macros. If a macro-enabled template is required, open that template first and import or paste the CSV data into its designated sheet instead of converting the CSV alone.

Directly opening a CSV can also work, but Excel may apply regional delimiter settings and automatic type conversion without giving the same import controls. Excel for the web can edit workbooks but is not a replacement for desktop Excel when creating or testing VBA macros.

Other desktop software

LibreOffice Calc can open the CSV and show an import dialog for character encoding, separator, and quoted text. Use File → Save As, select an Excel macro-enabled workbook format such as Excel 2007–365 (*.xlsm), and confirm the format choice. Microsoft Excel is preferable when the workbook contains VBA because LibreOffice may not fully preserve or execute Excel-specific VBA, formulas, controls, or external connections.

Online conversion

Services such as CloudConvert and Zamzar commonly provide CSV-to-XLSM conversion; select CSV as the source and XLSM as the output when that option is offered. Upload the file, verify the detected delimiter and encoding if the service exposes those settings, start the conversion, and download the result.

Online conversion is unsuitable for confidential, regulated, or personal data unless the organization has approved the service. Such services generally create an empty macro-enabled container around the imported data; they cannot recover macros that were never present, and their handling of formulas, data types, multiple sheets, or advanced Excel features may differ from desktop Excel. If the service offers only XLSX, do not rename that file to XLSM; open it in Excel and save it as an XLSM workbook.

Quality and compatibility checks

• Encoding: Use UTF-8 when the CSV contains accented characters or non-Latin scripts. A wrong encoding can permanently corrupt text during import.
• Data types: Check dates, times, decimal separators, percentages, currency, leading zeroes, negative values, and identifiers longer than Excel’s precise numeric range.
• Formulas: CSV fields beginning with =, +, -, or @ can be interpreted as formulas by spreadsheet software. Import untrusted fields as text and review them for formula-injection risk.
• Structure: One CSV file normally becomes one worksheet. Multiple CSV files, relationships, pivot tables, formatting, and validation rules require separate workbook design.
• Macros: An XLSM extension alone does not make a file automated. Test VBA in the intended desktop Excel version and confirm that macro security, external links, ActiveX controls, and add-ins are available.
• Size: XLSM is a structured workbook format and is usually larger than the source CSV; conversion is for workbook functionality and compatibility, not guaranteed size reduction.
