A CSV file may need conversion when you must edit it as a native Apple Numbers spreadsheet, add formulas or formatting, or share it with someone using Numbers. Converting it creates a .numbers document, but it cannot restore spreadsheet features that were not stored in the CSV.

What the CSV format is

CSV, or comma-separated values, is a plain-text format for tabular data. Each line normally represents a row, while a delimiter separates fields into columns. Despite the name, files may use commas, semicolons, or tabs, depending on the exporting application and regional settings.

Databases, accounting systems, contact managers, web applications, Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, and LibreOffice Calc commonly import or export CSV. CSV is used for reports, contact lists, data transfers, and tables that need to work across different programs.

CSV stores field values and has no standard representation for cell styles, formulas, charts, column widths, filters, comments, or multiple worksheets. A valid CSV can contain delimiters and line breaks inside quoted fields, and it may use UTF-8, UTF-16, or another character encoding.

What the NUMBERS format is

.numbers is the native document format of Apple Numbers. It supports formatted tables, formulas, charts, images, filters, comments, and multiple sheets containing tables.

A Numbers document is intended for editing in Numbers on macOS, iPhone, and iPad, and in Numbers for iCloud. Numbers can export it to formats such as .xlsx, .pdf, and .csv when recipients use other spreadsheet software.

How to convert a CSV file in Numbers

On macOS

1. Open Numbers and choose File → Open, then select the .csv file. You can also drag the file onto the Numbers window or double-click it if Numbers is associated with CSV files.
2. In the import dialog, select the character encoding and field delimiter if Numbers asks for them. Choose comma for conventional CSV, semicolon for many regional exports, or tab for tab-delimited data.
3. Inspect the preview for shifted columns, corrupted accented characters, unintended date conversions, and numbers interpreted incorrectly.
4. Import the file, then choose File → Save. Enter a filename and location if requested; Numbers saves the resulting document with the .numbers extension.

Do not blindly replace commas or semicolons in a text editor. A delimiter inside a quoted field is data rather than a column break, so global replacement can corrupt valid CSV records. Change the delimiter through Numbers’ import settings or use a CSV-aware editor.

On iPhone, iPad, or iCloud

In the Files app or iCloud Drive, open the CSV with Numbers. Confirm the imported table, then let Numbers save the opened document as a Numbers file. In Numbers for iCloud, upload or open the CSV in the browser and use its document download or export controls to obtain a Numbers document when that option is available. Menu names vary between operating-system and Numbers versions.

Without installed software

You can use the free converter on 101convert.com to create a .numbers file without installing software. Open the downloaded file in Numbers and check the tables, data types, and formatting. Do not upload confidential records unless the service’s handling and retention terms are acceptable.

Quality and compatibility limits

Conversion cannot recreate formulas, charts, colors, merged cells, comments, column widths, or additional worksheets because CSV does not contain those features. Rebuild them in Numbers after importing the data.

Check values that must remain exact. Spreadsheet software may convert 00125 to 125, interpret 03/04/2026 according to the current locale, remove leading zeros from product codes, or display long integers in scientific notation. Import identifier columns as text when their original character sequence matters.

Use UTF-8 when exporting CSV where possible. If characters are corrupted, reopen the original file with the correct encoding rather than editing the damaged imported values. Confirm the delimiter as well as the encoding; a wrong delimiter can place an entire row in one column or split fields incorrectly.

.numbers is primarily an Apple Numbers format and may not open in non-Apple spreadsheet programs. Export the finished document through File → Export To → Excel and use .xlsx when compatibility with Microsoft Excel or other spreadsheet applications is required.
