A device, website, editor, or print service may accept separate JPG pages but not a CBR archive. Extracting and converting the pages makes the comic usable outside a comic-book reader while preserving one file per page.

What the CBR format is

CBR means Comic Book RAR. It is a RAR archive given the .cbr extension, usually containing numbered page images and sometimes folders, metadata, or a cover. CBR is a container rather than an image format; its pages may be JPEG, PNG, GIF, or another image type. Digital comic readers, collectors, scanners, and comic-book archive managers commonly use it.

Comic readers such as CDisplayEx, YACReader, and SumatraPDF can open CBR files. Archive utilities such as 7-Zip can extract them. A CBR file is often created by renaming a RAR archive to .cbr, although the archive may use different RAR versions or contain non-JPEG images.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also called JPEG, is a widely supported raster-image format. Browsers, phones, image editors, social platforms, and many print services accept it without a comic-book reader. JPEG uses lossy compression, so it creates smaller files but can introduce blur, ringing, and block artifacts around lettering and line art.

A normal conversion creates one JPG per comic page, not one long JPG containing the entire book.

How to convert CBR files to JPG

Desktop method with 7-Zip and XnConvert

  1. Install 7-Zip and XnConvert from their official websites.
  2. Right-click the CBR file and choose 7-Zip → Extract to “comic-name\”. 7-Zip can usually identify the RAR archive from its contents even though the filename ends in .cbr.
  3. Open the extracted folder and check the page files. If they are already .jpg or .jpeg, no image conversion is required; copying or renaming those files preserves their existing quality.
  4. If the pages use PNG or another format, open XnConvert and use Input → Add folder to select the extracted page folder.
  5. In the Output tab, choose JPG/JPEG, select an output folder, and set quality to about 90–95%. Keep the original dimensions unless the target device requires resizing.
  6. Click Convert. XnConvert writes separate JPG files and can batch-process the complete page folder.

Do not convert JPEG pages to JPEG again unless necessary. A second lossy-compression pass can reduce text and line-art quality; extract the original JPEG files instead.

Command-line method

Extract the archive with 7-Zip:

7z x comic.cbr -o"pages"

With ImageMagick installed, create an output directory and convert the extracted image files:

mkdir jpg
magick mogrify -path jpg -format jpg -quality 92 pages/*

Use a file pattern that matches only image files if the archive contains metadata or other files. On systems where magick is unavailable, the ImageMagick 6 command may be convert. Rename or sort pages before processing if their filenames do not produce the required reading order.

Online conversion

Convertio, Zamzar, and CloudConvert commonly offer CBR-to-JPG conversion, but supported input and output behavior can change. Upload the CBR file, select JPG, start the conversion, and download the individual images or the ZIP archive provided by the service. Confirm that the service creates separate page files rather than a contact sheet.

Online conversion transfers the complete archive to a third-party server. Avoid it for private scans, unpublished material, or copyrighted files when the service’s handling and retention terms are unsuitable. Desktop extraction is preferable for large archives, password-protected files, and material that must remain local.

Quality and compatibility limits

Converting PNG pages to JPEG removes PNG’s lossless representation and may add artifacts, especially around black text on white backgrounds. Keep the extracted source pages, use a quality setting of at least 90 when JPEG is required, and avoid enlarging the images. If a service or application requires a specific maximum size, resize only after extraction and use the required pixel dimensions.

Page order depends on filenames. Lexical sorting can place page10.jpg before page2.jpg; names such as page001.jpg, page002.jpg, and page010.jpg sort reliably. Preserve the original sequence when renaming or batch-processing.

Encrypted archives require the password during extraction. Some older archive utilities cannot read newer RAR variants, so use a current 7-Zip release or another current RAR-compatible extractor if extraction fails. A CBR file that contains only JPEG pages needs extraction, not re-encoding.
