A program, API, or archival system may require XML even when the available file is an X86 executable or machine-code binary. The conversion usually creates an XML description of the binary rather than turning executable instructions into equivalent XML data.

What the X86 format is

An X86 file is generally a binary intended for processors using the x86 instruction set; the .x86 extension is not a single universal container specification. Compilers, assemblers, linkers, firmware toolchains, and software build systems can create x86 machine code, while downloaded utilities and legacy software packages are common places to encounter it.

The file may contain a complete executable such as an ELF or PE binary, a relocatable object, or raw machine-code bytes. The extension alone does not identify its executable format, operating system, bitness, entry point, or internal data structures.

What the XML format is

XML is a text-based markup format for representing structured data with elements, attributes, namespaces, and optional schema rules. It is used for configuration files, API exchanges, metadata, document storage, and systems that need human-readable or language-independent data.

XML cannot execute x86 instructions. A conversion can represent metadata, sections, symbols, strings, disassembled instructions, or the original binary as encoded data. The appropriate representation depends on what the receiving XML application expects.

How to actually convert X86 to XML

  1. Identify the input. On Linux or macOS, run file input.x86. For an ELF executable, inspect its header with readelf -h input.x86; for a compatible binary, use the relevant PE inspection tool. If the result is raw data, there may be no header or reliable architecture metadata.
  2. Try the built-in converter. Open 101convert.com, select the X86-to-XML conversion, upload input.x86, and download the resulting .xml file. The service is available free without installing desktop software. If the file is rejected, its contents may not match the X86 subtype supported by the converter.
  3. Choose the required XML model. For an inventory, export headers, sections, symbols, and hashes. For reverse engineering, export disassembled instructions and addresses. For a system that must retain the original bytes, store the binary as Base64 inside an XML element; this preserves data but increases its size by roughly one third.
  4. Use an analysis tool for unsupported binaries. Ghidra can identify the processor, parse many executable formats, and produce disassembly and symbol information. GNU objdump can produce a text disassembly with objdump -d -M intel input.x86 > disassembly.txt. A script can then map each instruction and metadata field into an application-specific XML structure, commonly with Python’s xml.etree.ElementTree.
  5. Validate the result. Open the output with an XML parser and, when supplied by the receiving application, validate it against that application’s XSD schema. Well-formed XML is not necessarily XML that the destination program can import.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

There is no standard one-to-one X86-to-XML mapping. A generic converter may preserve only file metadata or encode the complete binary, while a reverse-engineering export may omit compiler intent, source-level types, comments, and original variable names.

Disassembly is architecture- and mode-dependent: x86, x86-64, embedded code, packed binaries, overlays, and mixed code/data regions can require different analysis settings. Executable behavior, relocation information, signatures, permissions, and exact byte ordering may also be lost when the output contains only a textual instruction listing.

Do not execute an unknown X86 file merely to identify it. XML output containing Base64 or disassembly is normally much larger than the source binary, and converting it back requires a tool that understands the exact XML schema and encoding used.
