Convert VSDX to VDX

Older Microsoft Visio installations and XML-based document systems may require a .vdx file instead of the newer .vsdx format. The conversion needs a Visio exporter or an online service that explicitly supports VDX; changing the filename extension does not convert the file.

What the VSDX format is

VSDX is the default drawing format introduced with Microsoft Visio 2013. It is an Open Packaging Convention package: a ZIP container holding XML parts, relationship files, themes, media, metadata, and other resources.

Visio uses VSDX for flowcharts, network diagrams, organization charts, floor plans, engineering drawings, and business-process diagrams. Files commonly come from Visio 2013 or later, Microsoft 365 desktop Visio, SharePoint, or document-management systems.

What the VDX format is

VDX is Visio XML Drawing, a legacy XML-based Visio format normally stored as one XML document rather than a ZIP package. It was supported by older Visio releases and by workflows that process Visio's XML schema directly.

VDX remains editable in compatible Visio versions, but it does not represent every feature introduced in later VSDX releases. Visio 2013 and later can open some legacy formats but generally do not provide VDX as a save target.

How to convert VSDX to VDX

Use Visio 2013 or later, then Visio 2010 or earlier

Because newer Visio versions normally cannot save VDX directly, use an intermediate VSD file and an older Visio release that still exports VDX.

1. Open the .vsdx file in desktop Microsoft Visio 2013 or later.
2. Select File → Save As → Browse.
3. Set Save as type to Visio 2003–2010 Drawing (*.vsd), save the file, and close Visio.
4. Open the resulting .vsd file in Visio 2010 or an earlier compatible desktop release.
5. Select File → Save As and choose Visio XML Drawing (*.vdx) as the file type.
6. Reopen the .vdx file in the older Visio installation and inspect every page before delivering it.

The intermediate VSD step is necessary because Visio 2010 cannot open VSDX directly, while Visio 2013 and later generally removed VDX from their save formats. Edition and version differences can change the available file types, so confirm that the installed older Visio release lists Visio XML Drawing (*.vdx) before starting.

Do not rename .vsdx to .vdx. VSDX is a package containing multiple related files; VDX is a standalone XML document.

Use an online converter only when VDX is listed

Services such as CloudConvert, Zamzar, or Convertio may list Visio conversions, but their supported targets and conversion engines change. Use one only if its current selector explicitly accepts VSDX as the input and VDX as the output. A service that offers only PDF, SVG, PNG, or another target cannot produce an editable VDX file.

1. Upload a non-confidential copy of the VSDX file.
2. Select VSDX as the source and VDX as the output.
3. Download the result and open it in compatible Visio software.
4. Check the provider's retention and deletion policy before uploading confidential diagrams.

If VDX is not listed, use the desktop workflow; generic online Visio converters are not a reliable substitute for a legacy VDX exporter.

Compatibility and quality limits

The VSD-to-VDX and VSDX-to-VSD stages can discard or alter newer features, including themes, containers, data graphics, newer shape properties, visual effects, hyperlinks, embedded objects, custom metadata, and some shape data. Basic geometry, text, connectors, pages, and common formatting usually transfer more reliably.

After conversion, inspect page size and orientation, fonts, line styles, connector routing, layer visibility, shape data, hyperlinks, embedded content, and print layout. Font substitutions and changes to connector paths are common compatibility problems.

Keep the original .vsdx as the authoritative copy. VDX is not necessarily smaller: VSDX commonly compresses XML and resources inside its ZIP package, while VDX stores XML as plain text. Converting the VDX back to VSDX cannot restore information removed during export.
