Wii loaders and backup managers commonly require games in WBFS format, while Dolphin usually stores compressed disc images as RVZ. Converting the image lets compatible Wii hardware or software use a game that currently exists only as an RVZ file.
What the RVZ format is
RVZ is Dolphin Emulator’s compressed optical-disc image format for Nintendo Wii and, in supported cases, GameCube software. Dolphin creates RVZ files when you use Tools → Convert File or configure the emulator to store dumped discs in RVZ format.
RVZ uses block compression and can remove unused data from a dump while preserving the game data needed for emulation. It is smaller than an uncompressed ISO and is intended primarily for Dolphin, not for Wii USB loaders.
What the WBFS format is
WBFS usually means a Wii Backup File System game image saved with the .wbfs extension. USB loaders and Wii backup managers use these files because they store Wii disc content without retaining unused sectors from the original disc.
WBFS files are commonly placed in a device’s /wbfs/ directory and named with the game title and six-character Wii title ID, for example Game Name [ABCD01].wbfs. A .wbfs image is not the same thing as a physical WBFS-formatted partition; modern USB devices generally use FAT32 or NTFS while containing WBFS files.
How to convert RVZ to WBFS
Using Dolphin
- Install a current Dolphin release with RVZ support and ensure the source file is a Wii disc image. GameCube RVZ files are not suitable for WBFS output.
- Open Dolphin and select Tools → Convert File.
- Choose the
.rvzfile as the source. - Select WBFS as the destination format, choose an output folder with enough free space, and start the conversion.
- Check that Dolphin creates a file ending in
.wbfs. For a USB loader, place it under/wbfs/and use the loader or backup manager’s title-ID naming convention.
If the Dolphin build does not offer WBFS as an output format, first convert the RVZ to an ISO with Tools → Convert File, then import the ISO into a Wii backup manager that supports WBFS export. Do not simply rename .rvz to .wbfs; the internal image format remains unchanged.
Using the online converter
You can also convert the file for free on the 101convert.com website without installing software. Upload the RVZ, select WBFS as the output format when available, start the conversion, and download the resulting .wbfs file. Large disc images can take considerable time to upload and download, so a local Dolphin conversion is usually more practical for multi-gigabyte files.
Quality and compatibility limitations
This conversion is normally data-preserving rather than a video or audio transcode, so it does not reduce the game’s graphics or sound quality. WBFS may discard unused disc sectors and uses its own layout, meaning the output will not be byte-for-byte identical to the RVZ or to the original ISO.
WBFS is intended for Wii software. A GameCube RVZ should remain RVZ or be converted to an appropriate GameCube-compatible format. Confirm that the resulting file is a valid Wii image and test it with the intended loader; encryption, damaged source data, insufficient storage, or an outdated Dolphin build can cause conversion or startup failures.
