Convert RTE to RVT

RTE is a Revit template file used by Autodesk Revit. It stores preset settings for new projects, such as views, families, line styles, object styles, units, title blocks, and other standards. Architects, engineers, and BIM teams use RTE files to keep projects consistent and to speed up setup for repeated work.

RTE files are not meant to hold a finished building model. Instead, they act as a starting point for new Revit projects, especially in firms that need standardized templates across many jobs.

Target format: RVT

RVT is the main Autodesk Revit project file format. It contains the actual building information model, including geometry, views, sheets, schedules, families, and project data. RVT is the standard format used for day-to-day BIM authoring, coordination, documentation, and collaboration in Revit.

The main advantage of RVT is that it stores a complete editable project rather than just a template. It is the format you use when you want to work on a real building model, share it with collaborators, or export documentation and coordination data.

How to convert RTE to RVT

There is no true one-click RTE to RVT file conversion in the sense of a generic format translator. In Autodesk Revit, the normal workflow is to open the template and save it as a project.

1. Open Autodesk Revit.
2. Choose File → Open → Project.
3. Select the .rte template file.
4. Revit creates a new project based on that template.
5. Choose File → Save As → Project.
6. Save the file with a .rvt extension.

If you want to preserve the template for future use, keep the original .rte file unchanged and save the new project under a different name.

Best desktop software: Autodesk Revit is the correct and most reliable tool because it natively understands both formats.

Online converters: Reputable online converters are generally not recommended for RTE to RVT. This is a Revit-specific workflow, and cloud conversion services usually cannot preserve Revit template behavior correctly or may not support these proprietary files at all.

Notes on quality, compatibility, and limitations

RTE and RVT are closely related but not identical. Converting an RTE to RVT does not create a new model from nothing; it creates a project initialized from the template. Any template content becomes the starting state of the RVT file.

Compatibility depends on the Revit version. A template created in a newer version of Revit may not open in an older version. Also, once saved as RVT, the file is a project file, not a template, so it will no longer behave like an RTE when used to start new projects.

If the template contains linked files, paths, or office standards, verify them after saving, because some settings may need adjustment before the RVT is ready for production use.

Important: If you need to keep the file as a reusable template, do not overwrite the .rte. Save a separate .rvt copy instead.
