Convert VSS to VSSX

Modern Microsoft Visio workflows may require the XML-based .vssx format when a legacy stencil must be edited or shared with users of Visio 2013 and later. Converting it also avoids depending on an older binary .vss library.

What the VSS format is

.vss is the legacy binary Microsoft Visio Stencil format. It stores reusable shape masters with geometry, connection points, formatting, custom properties, and stencil metadata.

Visio 2003, 2007, and 2010 commonly created VSS files, and older commercial or organization-specific shape libraries may still use them. A VSS file normally opens in a stencil window; it is not a standalone Visio drawing.

What the VSSX format is

.vssx is the XML-based Visio Stencil format introduced with Visio 2013. It is the normal non-macro stencil format for current desktop versions of Microsoft Visio and uses a modern package structure that improves compatibility with newer releases.

VSSX is not guaranteed to be smaller than VSS. The conversion changes the file format and may change the size, but it is not a compression operation.

How to convert VSS to VSSX

Use the desktop edition of Microsoft Visio 2013 or later, including a compatible Microsoft 365 Visio desktop installation. Visio is the dependable tool because it can interpret both the legacy stencil structure and Visio-specific shape metadata.

1. Make a backup of the original .vss file and copy it to a writable folder if it is installed in a protected location.
2. Open Visio and select File → Open, then choose the VSS file. Visio opens it as a stencil window.
3. Select File → Save As.
4. Choose Visio Stencil (*.vssx) in the file-type list.
5. Enter a new filename, select the destination, and choose Save.
6. Close and reopen the new VSSX file. Test several masters, including connection points, previews, custom properties, and any shape behavior used by your drawings.

Do not overwrite the source when Visio opens it read-only or when the stencil is part of an installed library. Save a separate VSSX copy instead. Visio does not provide a general-purpose batch conversion workflow for large stencil collections, so multiple files normally require separate Save As operations or a carefully tested automation solution.

No reputable browser-based service reliably preserves Visio stencil masters, custom properties, connection behavior, and other proprietary data during this conversion. Services that claim to convert VSS files should be tested against nonconfidential copies; uploading a private shape library can expose intellectual property. Desktop Visio is the appropriate option.

Compatibility and limitations

Visio usually preserves the appearance and supported shape data, but older or third-party stencils can contain features that the installed release cannot reproduce. Check unusual controls, external links, legacy extensions, and custom behavior after conversion.

VSSX is macro-free. If the VSS file contains VBA or other macro content, saving it as VSSX will not preserve that content. Use the macro-enabled .vssm format when the target Visio version and your security policy support macros.

Keep the original VSS as a fallback and test the converted stencil in the Visio version used by its recipients. Older Visio releases that do not support VSSX may require the original VSS or an earlier compatible stencil format.
