Convert SAI2 to PSD

Clients, print services, and Adobe-based workflows often require an editable Photoshop document instead of a PaintTool SAI project. Saving the artwork as .psd allows layered handoff while retaining more editing information than a PNG or JPEG export.

What the SAI2 format is

.sai2 is the native project format used by PaintTool SAI Ver.2, the Windows illustration application from SYSTEMAX. SAI2 projects can contain raster paint layers, groups, transparency, clipping, selections, and SAI-specific linework data. They are primarily used by digital artists working in PaintTool SAI; other graphics applications generally cannot open the format directly.

What the PSD format is

.psd is Adobe Photoshop’s layered document format. Photoshop, Affinity Photo, Krita, Clip Studio Paint, and other graphics applications can open it. PSD can retain raster layers, groups, masks, transparency, and some application-specific editing data, making it suitable for continued editing, client delivery, archiving, and print workflows.

How to convert SAI2 to PSD

1. Make a backup of the original .sai2 file. Keep it as the master copy.
2. Open the project in PaintTool SAI Ver.2, using the version that created it or a later build that can open the file.
3. Check canvas dimensions, layer visibility, opacity, clipping, blend modes, masks, and linework before saving.
4. Choose File → Save As.
5. Select Photoshop (*.psd) as the file type, enter a different filename, and save the PSD.
6. Open the resulting .psd in Photoshop or the receiving application. Inspect the layer hierarchy and visible result before delivery.

PaintTool SAI Ver.2 is the preferred conversion tool because it can read the native project structure before writing the PSD. There is no widely reliable online service for direct .sai2 conversion; generic converters may reject the file, flatten it, or omit SAI-specific data. Uploading unpublished artwork to a third-party service also creates privacy and copyright risks.

If PaintTool SAI is unavailable, ask the creator to open the project and save the PSD. If only a rendered image is available, a reputable service such as CloudConvert may convert a PNG or JPEG to PSD, but the result will normally contain one raster layer and cannot reconstruct the original SAI2 layers. Use that route only for a flattened deliverable.

Quality and compatibility limits

PSD export is not a feature-for-feature translation. SAI linework layers, brush settings, vector-like editing data, and other native tools may be rasterized, discarded, or changed. Clipping, blend modes, masks, selections, and group behavior can also differ between SAI and the destination application, so verify them after conversion.

SAI2 is generally used for RGB painting, while a receiving workflow may require a particular color profile, color mode, or bit depth. Check the PSD’s document settings in the destination application and convert them there when required; color-mode or bit-depth changes can affect gradients, colors, and file size. Preserve the original .sai2 project whenever further editing in PaintTool SAI may be needed.
