How to convert ogg to mus file

An audio recording may need conversion when a notation program or collaborator requires an editable Finale score instead of a playable sound file. OGG cannot be directly saved as MUS: the recording must first be transcribed into MIDI or notation data, then opened and saved by compatible Finale software.

What the OGG format is

OGG usually means an Ogg container containing lossy Vorbis audio, although Ogg can also contain codecs such as Opus. It is used for compressed music, instrument recordings, game audio, and rehearsal files; applications including Audacity, FFmpeg, VLC, and many game engines can create or decode it. An OGG file contains sampled sound, not notes, measures, staves, lyrics, or engraving instructions.

What the MUS format is

In music-composition software, MUS normally means the legacy native notation format used by MakeMusic Finale. It stores editable score data such as notes, rhythms, staves, articulations, lyrics, expressions, and page layout. Unlike OGG, it describes a composition rather than an audio performance.

Finale's newer native format is .musx. A current Finale installation may open an older .mus file and convert it to .musx, but it may not be able to save a new legacy MUS file. Exact MUS output requires a compatible older Finale release, such as Finale 2012, that supports the legacy format.

How to convert OGG to MUS

  1. Decode OGG to WAV. Use FFmpeg to create a widely supported transcription input: ffmpeg -i input.ogg -ar 44100 -ac 2 input.wav. WAV avoids another lossy encoding step, but it cannot restore detail already discarded by Vorbis compression.
  2. Transcribe the audio to MIDI or MusicXML. For a free desktop option, install Spotify's open-source Basic Pitch with pip install basic-pitch, then run basic_pitch output_directory input.wav. The generated MIDI contains estimated pitches and durations. AnthemScore is a paid graphical alternative that can analyze supported WAV files and export MIDI. Online services such as Klangio Transcription and Melody Scanner can also produce MIDI or MusicXML from supported audio; convert the OGG to WAV first if their upload form does not accept OGG, and check their current format limits.
  3. Correct the transcription. Open the MIDI in a notation editor or sequencer and fix tempo, meter, key, pickup measures, quantization, split points, octave errors, voices, and instrument assignments. If the service provides MusicXML, it generally preserves notation structure better than MIDI and can be imported into Finale with File → Import → MusicXML.
  4. Import into Finale. For MIDI, use File → Open, select the MIDI file, and configure tracks, channels, quantization, and split points in Finale's MIDI import settings. Review every staff and measure after import; MIDI does not preserve the recording's original engraving, beaming, phrasing, lyrics, dynamics, or page layout.
  5. Save the Finale file. In a Finale release that supports the required legacy format, use File → Save As and choose .mus. If the installed release offers only .musx, save that format and use a compatible licensed older Finale release for legacy MUS output. Renaming .musx to .mus does not convert the file.

Quality and compatibility limits

There is no dependable one-click OGG-to-MUS conversion because audio contains a performance while MUS requires a structured score. A clear monophonic melody usually transcribes better than piano chords, orchestral mixes, percussion, reverberation, distortion, or recordings with several performers. Automatic transcription commonly misreads rhythm, ties, rests, polyphony, ornamentation, dynamics, and pitch spelling, so manual editing is normally required.

Finale PrintMusic does not turn an MP3, OGG, or WAV recording into notation; changing the audio codec does not solve the transcription problem. Ordinary file converters can create WAV or MP3, but not a valid Finale MUS file. Online transcription requires uploading the recording, which may be unsuitable for unpublished or copyrighted music. Use the resulting MIDI or MusicXML as an intermediate and verify compatibility with the specific Finale version that must open the finished score.
