Convert NWF to NWD

Convert Navisworks NWF projects to portable NWD files with Autodesk desktop software.

How to convert nwf to nwd file

Source format: NWF

NWF is a Navisworks project file used by Autodesk Navisworks. It stores a coordination session, including references to appended model files, viewpoints, comments, and other review data. An NWF file usually does not contain the full model geometry itself; instead, it points to external source files. This makes it useful for architects, engineers, construction teams, and BIM coordinators working in review and clash-detection workflows.

Target format: NWD

NWD is a Navisworks published model file. It is a more portable, self-contained format designed for sharing and viewing coordinated models. Compared with NWF, an NWD is easier to distribute because recipients do not need the original source files to open the published package in Navisworks Freedom or another compatible Autodesk viewer.

How to convert NWF to NWD

The reliable way to create an NWD from an NWF is to use Autodesk Navisworks Manage or Autodesk Navisworks Simulate. These desktop versions can open an NWF and publish it as an NWD. Navisworks Freedom cannot create NWD files; it is for viewing only.

  1. Open Autodesk Navisworks Manage or Navisworks Simulate.
  2. Open the .nwf file with File → Open.
  3. Check that all referenced source models load correctly and that the coordination view looks right.
  4. Use File → Save As or File → Publish, depending on your Navisworks version and workflow.
  5. Choose Navisworks Document or NWD as the output type.
  6. Save the file with a .nwd extension.

If your goal is to share a read-only package, publishing to NWD is usually the better choice because it creates a more portable file for recipients.

Online converters

There are very few reputable online converters for .nwf to .nwd. This is a specialized Autodesk workflow, and web tools rarely support it correctly. In addition, uploading BIM project files to third-party services can expose sensitive project data. For that reason, desktop Autodesk software is the recommended method.

Important limitations

NWF to NWD is not a conversion between unrelated formats; it is a publish operation within the Navisworks ecosystem. The resulting NWD is only as complete as the source data available at publish time. If referenced files are missing, moved, or broken, the published output may be incomplete or inaccurate.

NWD files are intended for viewing and sharing, not for editing the original coordination setup. If you need to continue working on the project, keep the original .nwf file as your editable working file. For best results, make sure all linked models are current before publishing.

When this workflow may fail

If the NWF references files that are unavailable on your system, Navisworks may open the project with missing content or unresolved links. In that case, fix the source paths first, then publish again. Also note that some Navisworks features and file handling can vary by version, so if File → Publish is unavailable, use the save/publish option provided by your installed edition.
