Understanding DST and DWT file formats

DST files are embroidery design files used primarily by embroidery machines, especially those from Tajima. These files contain stitch commands and patterns for automated embroidery. DWT files, on the other hand, are AutoCAD Drawing Template files. They store drawing standards, settings, and layouts to be reused as templates for new CAD projects.

Why convert DST to DWT?

Converting a DST embroidery file to a DWT template is not a typical workflow, as these formats serve entirely different purposes—one for embroidery machines and the other for CAD drafting. However, you might want to convert a DST design into a DWT template if you need to incorporate embroidery patterns into CAD drawings, such as for textile design documentation or manufacturing planning.

How to convert DST to DWT

Direct conversion from DST to DWT is not natively supported by most software, as they are fundamentally different. The process generally involves two steps:

1. Convert DST to a vector format (such as DXF or SVG) using embroidery software.
2. Import the vector file into AutoCAD and save it as a DWT template.

Recommended software for conversion

• Wilcom Embroidery Studio: Allows you to open DST files and export them as DXF vector files.
• Ink/Stitch (Inkscape extension): Free and open-source, can convert DST to SVG, which can then be imported into AutoCAD.
• AutoCAD: Import the DXF or SVG file, then use File → Save As → AutoCAD Drawing Template (*.dwt) to create your template.

Step-by-step conversion process

1. Open your DST file in Wilcom Embroidery Studio or Ink/Stitch.
2. Export the design as a DXF or SVG file.
3. Open AutoCAD and import the DXF or SVG file.
4. Adjust the imported design as needed within your drawing template.
5. Go to File → Save As → AutoCAD Drawing Template (*.dwt) to save your new template.
