Convert BAK to CSV

A program may require CSV for importing records, spreadsheet editing, reporting, or data exchange, while the available .bak file is only a backup. The correct conversion method depends on the application that created the backup; changing the extension rarely converts the data.

What the BAK format is

.bak is a generic backup-file extension, not a standardized data format. Microsoft SQL Server uses it for database backups; AutoCAD uses it for drawing recovery copies; accounting, laboratory, contact-management, and other applications use it for proprietary project or document backups.

Identify the creating program from the file location, filename, backup logs, or the computer that produced it. A SQL Server BAK can contain tables, indexes, stored procedures, and transaction-log information, but it is not a CSV file hidden behind a different extension. A text editor may show readable fragments from a text-based backup, but binary or proprietary content must be opened by the original software.

What the CSV format is

CSV stores tabular data as rows of fields separated by commas or another delimiter. The first row often contains column names. Fields containing delimiters, quotation marks, or line breaks must be quoted and escaped according to CSV rules.

Excel, LibreOffice Calc, Google Sheets, Python, R, databases, and many import services support CSV. It is suitable for sharing selected records, editing flat tables, and loading data into another system. CSV does not preserve database relationships, indexes, permissions, stored procedures, formulas, or most database-specific data types.

How to convert a SQL Server BAK file to CSV

For a Microsoft SQL Server backup, restore the database with SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), then export the required table or query results. Renaming the file or using a generic file converter will not extract database records.

1. Connect SSMS to a SQL Server instance compatible with the backup. A backup made by a newer SQL Server version generally cannot be restored to an older version.
2. In Object Explorer, right-click Databases → Restore Database.
3. Choose Device as the source, select the .bak file, and verify the backup set and destination database.
4. On Files, change the database and log-file locations if the original paths are unavailable. On Options, select Overwrite the existing database only if replacing an existing database is intentional.
5. Restore the database and run a query that selects only the required columns and rows, such as SELECT CustomerID, Name, Email FROM dbo.Customers;.
6. For a one-time export, use the Import and Export Wizard through Tasks → Export Data. Select SQL Server as the source and Flat File Destination as the destination.
7. Set the output name to customers.csv, choose comma as the delimiter, enable column names if needed, and check the text qualifier, encoding, NULL handling, and date representation before running the export.

For repeatable exports, use bcp with an explicit query:

-T uses Windows authentication; replace it with SQL Server authentication options when necessary. The -c option uses the system code page, while -w writes Unicode output. Confirm that the receiving application supports the selected encoding.

How to handle other BAK files

For an AutoCAD backup, make a copy, rename drawing.bak to drawing.dwg, and open it in AutoCAD. Use AutoCAD’s Data Extraction or another application-specific export to produce CSV-compatible tabular data. Drawing geometry is not directly convertible to CSV; first define which object properties should become columns.

For a backup from accounting, laboratory, contact-management, or other proprietary software, restore or open the copy in that program and use its Export, Save As, or report-export command. Some programs require the same version, database engine, license, or supporting files used to create the backup.

If inspection shows that a BAK file is genuinely plain-text data already arranged as CSV, work on a copy, verify the delimiter and quoting, and rename it to .csv or save it from a text editor with the correct encoding. Renaming changes only the filename; it does not convert an arbitrary backup.

Quality and compatibility limits

Check the exported file in a text editor and in the receiving application. Dates can change with server or regional settings, decimal separators can conflict with delimiter settings, binary values may require hexadecimal or Base64 encoding, and multiline text can occupy several physical lines inside a correctly quoted CSV field.

Large identifiers may lose leading zeroes when opened in spreadsheet software. Define NULL values, text qualifiers, character encoding, line endings, date formats, and delimiter rules for the target system. Exporting a database to CSV also discards relationships, indexes, permissions, stored procedures, and unsupported data types.

Do not upload an unknown or confidential BAK file to an online service. Services such as CloudConvert or Convertio are suitable only when the creator and internal format are known and the service explicitly supports that format; they do not restore or interpret ordinary SQL Server backups. For SQL Server and other proprietary backups, local restoration and export through the original software are the reliable options.
