ABR is an Adobe Photoshop brush preset file format. It stores one or more brush tips and brush settings such as shape, spacing, scattering, texture, and dynamics. ABR files are commonly used by graphic designers, digital painters, illustrators, and photo editors who work in Adobe Photoshop or compatible painting software.

Target format: CSH

CSH is an Adobe Photoshop custom shapes file format. It stores vector-based shape presets that can be loaded into Photoshop’s shape tools. CSH files are useful for logos, icons, symbols, decorative elements, and reusable vector shapes. Compared with brushes, custom shapes are intended for crisp, scalable outlines rather than painted strokes.

Can abr be converted to csh?

In general, no direct ABR-to-CSH conversion exists. The two formats store different kinds of preset data: ABR files define brush behavior and brush tips, while CSH files contain vector shape presets. Because of that, there is usually no reliable one-click conversion that preserves the original preset information.

Important: a brush tip may look like a shape, but that does not mean it can be turned into a true custom shape file automatically. Brush dynamics, textures, and stroke behavior have no direct equivalent in CSH.

Best practical workflow

1. Open the ABR file in Adobe Photoshop by choosing Window → Brushes or Window → Brush Settings, then use the panel menu to Import Brushes.
2. Review the brushes and identify any tip that could be recreated as a clean outline.
3. Manually redraw or trace the brush tip as a vector shape using Photoshop’s shape tools or a vector editor such as Adobe Illustrator or Inkscape.
4. If you need a reusable Photoshop shape preset, save the recreated vector artwork as a CSH file using Photoshop’s custom shape workflow, if supported by your version.

Recommended software

Adobe Photoshop is the main application for working with both ABR brushes and CSH shapes. For rebuilding artwork as vectors, Adobe Illustrator and Inkscape are useful for tracing, refining, and exporting clean outlines before bringing them into Photoshop.

If you only need to use the brush visually, you can keep it in ABR format and import it directly into Photoshop or another compatible brush-based app.

Online converters

There are no reputable online converters that can accurately transform ABR brush presets into true CSH custom shapes. Sites claiming instant conversion usually cannot preserve the underlying preset data and may only offer image extraction or unrelated file handling.

Limitations and compatibility

ABR and CSH are fundamentally different preset types, so a direct conversion is generally not possible without manual recreation. Even when a brush tip resembles a shape, the brush file may include dynamics and texture that cannot be represented in CSH. If your goal is to preserve brush behavior, stay with ABR. If your goal is to create a scalable vector outline, recreate the artwork manually and then save it as a shape preset.
