Convert VSSX to VSS

Legacy Microsoft Visio installations and integrations may accept only the binary .vss stencil format, while newer Visio releases use .vssx. Converting the stencil lets older software reuse its editable shape masters instead of receiving an image or a flattened document.

What the VSSX format is

.vssx is the XML-based Microsoft Visio stencil format used by Visio 2013 and later. It is an Open Packaging Convention file containing reusable master shapes, including geometry, connection points, text, formatting, shape data, and master metadata. Custom shape libraries, organization-specific stencils, and current Visio stencil downloads commonly use VSSX.

What the VSS format is

.vss is the older binary Visio stencil format used by Visio 2003–2010. It stores editable Visio master shapes rather than rasterized pictures, so users can drag the masters into drawings and modify their properties. Its main advantage is compatibility with legacy Visio installations and integrations, but it cannot represent every feature available in newer Visio formats.

How to convert VSSX to VSS

Use the desktop edition of Microsoft Visio 2013 or later. Visio provides the native conversion and is the most reliable option for preserving masters, connectors, and stencil metadata.

1. Open Microsoft Visio and select File → Open → Browse.
2. Select the source .vssx file. If it is read-only or stored in a protected location, copy it to a writable folder first.
3. Select File → Save As or File → Save a Copy.
4. Choose Visio 2003–2010 Stencil (*.vss) in the file-type list.
5. Specify the output folder, save the file, and accept the compatibility warning after reviewing any listed feature changes.
6. Close and reopen the new .vss file. Drag several representative masters into a test drawing and check their geometry, text, connectors, custom properties, and formatting.

Visio 2003–2010 cannot open VSSX directly, so the conversion must be completed in a newer desktop Visio release or by someone who has access to one. Visio for the web does not provide the same desktop Save As conversion for legacy stencil files.

General online converters are not a dependable alternative for this conversion: many support Visio page documents or image exports but not stencil masters. Use an online service only if its current documentation explicitly lists VSSX input and VSS output, and do not upload confidential or proprietary stencil libraries without checking its retention and privacy terms.

Compatibility and quality limits

This is a downgrade from an XML-based package to an older binary format. Visio may remove or alter newer shape behaviors, shape-data features, theme formatting, 3-D effects, custom properties, or other elements without an equivalent in VSS. Keep the original .vssx as the archival copy and test the converted stencil in the oldest Visio version or integration that must use it.
