How to convert tib to vmdk file

A VMware virtual machine requires a virtual disk such as VMDK, while an Acronis backup is stored as a TIB archive. The usual reason for this conversion is to boot a recovered physical system in VMware Workstation, Fusion, or ESXi for migration, testing, or disaster recovery.

What the TIB format is

TIB is Acronis’s proprietary backup-container format, used by Acronis True Image and some Acronis Cyber Protect products. An archive can contain an entire disk, selected partitions, files, incremental or differential changes, compression, and encryption. Newer products may create .tibx archives instead; the restore process depends on the Acronis product and version that created the backup.

A bootable virtual machine requires an entire-disk or disk-and-partition backup. A file-level backup can restore files but cannot by itself recreate the operating-system partitions and boot configuration.

What the VMDK format is

VMDK is VMware’s virtual hard-disk format. VMware Workstation, VMware Fusion, and VMware ESXi can attach VMDK disks to virtual machines. A VMDK may consist of one descriptor and one or more extent files, and may be thin-provisioned or preallocated.

The VMDK stores partitions and guest file systems; the VM’s firmware mode, virtual hardware, memory, and other settings are stored separately. This makes VMDK suitable for running a restored physical installation as a VMware guest.

Preferred method: restore the TIB directly to a VMware disk

Acronis generally does not convert a TIB by changing its filename or exporting its archive container. Instead, create or select a VMware virtual disk and restore the backed-up disk contents into it.

  1. Create a new VM in VMware Workstation, Fusion, or an ESXi datastore. Add a virtual disk at least as large as the source disk or the partition layout being restored.
  2. Configure the VM with the same boot mode as the source system. Use the original BIOS or UEFI arrangement; do not assume that changing the mode will make an incompatible installation boot. Add additional virtual disks if the source used multiple physical disks.
  3. Create Acronis bootable rescue media compatible with the archive, usually an ISO, and attach it through VM → Settings → CD/DVD. Boot the VM from that ISO.
  4. In the Acronis recovery environment, choose Recover → Entire machine or Recover → Disks and partitions. Locate the TIB archive and, when applicable, provide the archive password.
  5. Select the complete source disk or all required partitions, including the EFI System Partition, Microsoft Reserved partition, system-reserved partition, recovery partition, and operating-system partition as applicable. Select the VMware virtual disk as the destination.
  6. Include every file in the required incremental or differential chain. A later incremental backup is unusable if an earlier archive in that chain is missing.
  7. Shut down the rescue environment, disconnect the ISO, and boot from the restored VMDK. If the guest fails to start, use Acronis Universal Restore where licensed and available, or repair the Windows or Linux boot loader with the operating system’s recovery media.

The resulting VMDK is the destination disk created by VMware; no separate TIB-to-VMDK encoder is required. Verify the archive in Acronis before restoring it.

Direct recovery to ESXi

Some Acronis business editions provide physical-to-virtual recovery directly to VMware. A typical management-console path is Recover → Virtual machine → VMware ESXi; select the recovery point, ESXi host, datastore, VM name, and virtual hardware, then start the recovery. Menu names and availability vary by Acronis edition, license, and deployment, so use the rescue-media method when a VMware destination is not offered.

Using a disk conversion utility

If Acronis first restores the archive to a physical disk or to an image format supported by a conversion utility, StarWind V2V Converter can convert that supported source to VMDK. It should not be treated as a general TIB reader: restore the TIB with Acronis first, then convert the resulting disk or supported image.

Older VMware vCenter Converter Standalone releases included limited support for importing certain Acronis True Image archives, commonly older TIB versions. vCenter Converter Standalone is discontinued, and support depended on the exact Converter and Acronis versions; it is not a dependable method for current TIB or TIBX files.

Compatibility and security limitations

Restoration changes the hardware presented to the operating system. Windows may require reactivation and storage, chipset, network, or boot-driver changes. Linux may require initramfs or boot-loader repair. Install VMware Tools only after the restored guest boots successfully.

Keep the original archive until the VM has been tested, and preserve the original partition layout when possible. Expect different virtual hardware identifiers and possibly a different disk identifier. Encryption, damaged archives, missing backup-chain members, unsupported file systems, and backups tied to special storage drivers can prevent recovery.

General online converters are not suitable for this operation. A full TIB archive can be very large, contains potentially sensitive system data, and may be encrypted or proprietary; major online file-conversion services generally do not provide reliable TIB-to-VMDK restoration. Use Acronis locally and, if needed, a desktop disk converter such as StarWind V2V after restoration.
