Convert TIB to VHD

A Hyper-V virtual machine or another virtualization product may require a VHD instead of an Acronis backup archive. The conversion restores the backup into a virtual hard disk; it does not merely rename the file or change its extension.

What the TIB format is

TIB is the proprietary disk-image and backup format used by Acronis True Image and some Acronis Cyber Protect products. A TIB archive can contain a complete disk, selected partitions, or individual files, and may be compressed or encrypted. Newer Acronis releases may create .tibx files; a program that supports legacy .tib archives may not support TIBX.

A TIB archive is not a virtual hard disk that Hyper-V can normally attach directly. Acronis must interpret the archive and restore its disk or partition contents into a VHD container.

What the VHD format is

VHD is Microsoft's Virtual Hard Disk format. Hyper-V, Virtual PC, Windows Disk Management, and other virtualization utilities can attach it as a virtual disk. It can contain an operating-system installation, partition table, boot files, applications, and user data, or it can serve as a secondary data disk.

VHD supports fixed and dynamically expanding disks and is useful when compatibility with older Microsoft virtualization tools is required. For current Hyper-V deployments, .vhdx is generally preferable because it supports disks up to 64 TB and provides improved resilience; VHD is limited to about 2,040 GB.

How to convert a TIB file with Acronis

1. Install the Acronis product that created the archive, or a release that explicitly supports the TIB version. Copy the archive to a local disk or a reliable network share and ensure that the destination has enough free space.
2. Open Acronis and select Tools → Convert backup to virtual disk, or the equivalent command in that release. The feature is not present in every Acronis edition.
3. Select the TIB archive and choose the complete disk backup or required partition set. A file-level backup cannot produce a bootable virtual disk.
4. Choose VHD as the output type. Older Acronis versions may label this choice Microsoft Virtual PC; that option creates a VHD file. Select a destination and, if offered, choose fixed size for predictable allocation or dynamic size to reduce initial host storage use.
5. Start the conversion and allow Acronis to validate and write the output. Do not modify or move the source archive during the operation.
6. In Hyper-V Manager, attach the VHD to the destination virtual machine. For a Generation 1 boot disk, use the IDE controller; a Generation 2 VM can boot from a SCSI-attached disk and requires UEFI. Use a firmware and partition combination that matches the restored system: BIOS with MBR, or UEFI with GPT.

The exact menu names and output choices vary between Acronis True Image, Acronis Cyber Protect, and product generations. If the conversion command is missing, use the restore method below instead.

Restore into a blank VHD when direct conversion is unavailable

1. Create a blank VHD with Hyper-V Manager or PowerShell, for example New-VHD -Path 'D:\VM\disk.vhd' -SizeBytes 120GB -Dynamic. The Hyper-V PowerShell module must be installed.
2. Attach the blank VHD to a temporary virtual machine, then boot that machine from Acronis rescue media. Alternatively, attach the disk to a system running a compatible Acronis recovery environment.
3. Choose Recover → Disks or Recover whole disks and partitions, select the TIB archive as the source, and select the blank VHD as the destination.
4. Restore every partition required by the source system, including the EFI System Partition, Microsoft Reserved partition, recovery partition, and operating-system partition when present. Restoring only the Windows volume commonly leaves the disk unable to boot.
5. Detach the completed VHD and attach it to the target VM. If it fails to boot, use Acronis Universal Restore, when licensed and available, or Windows recovery tools to install suitable storage and boot drivers and repair the boot configuration.

Compatibility and quality limits

Acronis must support the archive's version, encryption, compression, and backup type. A TIB made by a newer product may require that product or its rescue media; renaming .tib to .vhd never converts the data.

Restoring a physical Windows installation into Hyper-V can trigger driver changes, activation checks, and hardware-dependent software problems. Modern Windows versions include Hyper-V integration services in the guest; older operating systems may require separate integration components or drivers.

Verify the source partition style and the VM generation before conversion. Generation 1 is intended for legacy BIOS/MBR booting, while Generation 2 uses UEFI and normally boots GPT disks. Attach a data-only disk independently of these boot requirements.

No reputable general-purpose online converter is normally suitable for this conversion. TIB archives are proprietary, can contain complete systems and confidential data, and are often too large for browser upload limits; server-side services also cannot reliably preserve boot partitions and metadata. Use Acronis desktop software or rescue media, test the resulting VM and its files, and retain the original TIB until verification is complete.
