Convert PKA to PKT

Cisco Packet Tracer users need this conversion when an activity file must become an ordinary, editable network simulation for sharing, troubleshooting, or archival. The resulting .pkt file does not retain the graded activity wrapper.

What the PKA format is

.pka is Cisco Packet Tracer’s activity format. Instructors create it with the Packet Tracer Activity Wizard to combine a network topology with instructions, completion requirements, device restrictions, and automated assessment criteria.

PKA files are used mainly in Cisco Networking Academy coursework, classroom labs, practice exercises, and skills assessments. Cisco Packet Tracer is the primary application that creates and opens them.

What the PKT format is

.pkt is Packet Tracer’s standard network simulation format. It stores a topology and the device configurations needed to inspect, edit, troubleshoot, and run the simulation.

A PKT file is suitable when the recipient needs an editable topology without activity instructions, answer checks, scoring rules, or other assessment controls. It remains a Cisco Packet Tracer project; it is not a generic network diagram, configuration export, or text file.

How to save a PKA file as PKT

1. Install Cisco Packet Tracer from an official Cisco source, such as the Cisco Networking Academy or Skills for All download area. Use the version that created the activity, or a newer version confirmed to support it.
2. Make a backup copy of the original .pka file.
3. Open the activity in Packet Tracer with File → Open.
4. Choose File → Save As.
5. In the file-type selector, choose Packet Tracer Network Simulation or the equivalent PKT option, then save with a name such as routing-lab.pkt.
6. Close and reopen the new file. Check the topology, links, device configurations, and any simulation behavior that matters to the recipient.

Packet Tracer versions label the output option differently, and some activities do not permit saving to another format. If Save As offers no PKT option, renaming lesson.pka to lesson.pkt will not convert it; the internal binary format remains PKA. Create a new Packet Tracer project and reproduce the topology and configurations, or request an unrestricted PKT file from the activity author.

Compatibility and limitations

Saving an activity as PKT generally removes the PKA activity wrapper, including its instructions, assessment items, completion status, grading rules, and author-imposed restrictions. The exact result depends on the Packet Tracer version and on what the activity permits, so retain the original PKA file and use the conversion only when you are authorized to extract or redistribute its topology.

Packet Tracer releases can differ in supported devices, commands, protocol behavior, and file serialization. Open the output in the version used by the recipient and verify configurations rather than assuming every activity feature transferred unchanged.

There is no dependable general-purpose online converter for these Cisco-specific binary formats. Reputable conversion services normally do not support PKA and PKT, and uploading a file can disclose coursework, credentials, network designs, or assessment content. Use Packet Tracer itself; do not use a file-renaming utility or an unverified upload service.
