Banks commonly provide transaction histories as .ofx files, but Apple Numbers does not normally open OFX directly. Converting the statement to a .numbers document makes the transactions editable for budgeting, reconciliation, reporting, or tax preparation.

What the OFX format is

OFX, or Open Financial Exchange, is a structured financial-data format used by banks, credit unions, brokerages, personal-finance programs, and accounting software. An .ofx file can contain account information, currency, opening and closing balances, transaction dates, payees, amounts, transaction types, memos, and bank-assigned transaction identifiers.

Online-banking portals commonly offer OFX downloads. Applications such as Quicken, Microsoft Money, GnuCash, and other finance programs can import or create OFX data. OFX is intended for exchanging financial records, not for directly editing transaction rows in a spreadsheet.

What the NUMBERS format is

.numbers is the native document format used by Apple Numbers. A Numbers document can contain multiple sheets and tables, formulas, charts, formatting, filters, and notes, making it suitable for categorizing transactions, calculating totals, preparing budgets, and creating accounting reports on Mac, iPhone, or iPad.

Numbers can export a completed spreadsheet to .xlsx, .csv, PDF, and other formats when the data must be opened in non-Apple software. A .numbers file is a Numbers document, not simply a renamed CSV or OFX file.

How to convert OFX to NUMBERS

Quality and compatibility limits

Conversion to a spreadsheet usually preserves visible transaction rows and basic account information, but it may omit OFX-specific data such as statement metadata, bank transaction identifiers, matching information, investment records, recurring-payment details, or account-level fields. It also does not preserve the original OFX import behavior used by accounting software.

Regional settings can change how Numbers interprets dates, decimal separators, and negative amounts. Confirm that day-month dates were not read as month-day dates, withdrawals remain negative or are assigned to the correct debit column, and the calculated closing balance agrees with the bank statement.

OFX files contain sensitive financial information. Before uploading one to an online converter, review the service's privacy and retention terms; use a local finance application instead when the statement cannot be sent to a third party. Keep the original OFX file unchanged for reconciliation and records.
