A trader needs an MQ4 file to inspect, modify, or port an MT4 Expert Advisor, indicator, or script supplied only as an EX4 file. The original source is also needed to fix compiler errors, review trading logic, or adapt code for MetaTrader 5.
What EX4 files are
.ex4 is the compiled program format used by MetaTrader 4 (MT4). MetaEditor compiles MQL4 source into EX4 programs that MT4 can run as Expert Advisors, custom indicators, or scripts.
MT4 loads these files from its data folder, normally under MQL4\Experts, MQL4\Indicators, or MQL4\Scripts. Vendors commonly distribute EX4 files so users can run a trading tool without receiving editable source code.
What MQ4 files are
.mq4 is plain-text source code written in the MQL4 language. It can be opened, reviewed, edited, version-controlled, and compiled in MetaEditor.
MQ4 source makes it possible to alter strategy rules, input parameters, alerts, chart output, error handling, and broker-specific behavior. It also permits code review before the program is attached to a chart or allowed to trade.
Can EX4 be converted to MQ4?
No supported, reliable conversion restores an EX4 file to its original MQ4 source. Compilation discards or transforms comments, formatting, source-file layout, meaningful names, and other information required to reproduce the original code accurately.
Some older EX4 files have been reverse-engineered by third-party decompilers, but the resulting output is not the original source and may be incomplete, incorrect, or unusable with current MT4 builds. Decompiling proprietary software can also breach a license agreement, copyright law, or other applicable terms. Do not treat a decompiled file as safe or functionally equivalent without independent review and testing.
There is no reputable online EX4-to-MQ4 converter that can reliably recover arbitrary original source code. Uploading an EX4 file to a decompiler website can expose proprietary trading logic and may put the file in the hands of an untrusted service.

- Ask the developer, vendor, or previous owner for the matching
.mq4source and all dependencies, including files underMQL4\Include, required DLLs, and external data files. - Open MT4 and select File → Open Data Folder. Put the supplied MQ4 file in the appropriate folder, such as
MQL4\Experts\MyEA.mq4. - Open MetaEditor through Tools → MetaQuotes Language Editor, open the source file, and press
F7to compile it. MetaEditor is the correct desktop tool for compiling MQ4 to EX4, not for reversing EX4 to MQ4. - Resolve missing includes and compiler errors, then restart MT4 or refresh the Navigator panel. Test the resulting program on a demo account and in the Strategy Tester before live use.
- If source is unavailable, keep using the licensed EX4 in MT4, purchase a source-code license if offered, or commission a developer to write a new implementation from documented behavior. A replacement is a separate development project, not a file conversion.
Compatibility limits
EX4 programs run in MetaTrader 4 only. MetaTrader 5 uses .ex5 executables and MQL5 source; changing an MQ4 or EX4 extension does not make it compatible with MT5. Porting to MT5 requires the MQ4 source and code changes for MQL5 APIs, trading functions, and event handling.
An EX4 may also depend on the MT4 build used to compile it, included libraries, terminal settings, broker symbols, or external DLL permissions. Preserve the original EX4, its input settings, dependency files, and MT4 build information before reinstalling the terminal or changing platforms.
